How to fix your dopamine-saturated brain permanently.
Here is Andrew Huberman's protocol of 7 simple lifestyle changes to fix it:
1) Stop drinking alcohol.
Drinking today steals tomorrow's happiness.
Regular use causes mental confusion, lack of motivation, hyperventilation and stress.
Alcohol increases dopamine levels, which makes you crave the substance even more.
Each year, more than 88,000 people die in the United States from alcohol-related causes.
In the United States, 15 million people suffer from an alcohol use disorder, but less than 10% of them receive treatment.
2. Stop watching p*rn.
P*rn creates a distorted reality about sex and women.
Then you come back to reality and feel like, "I thought I was better than that."
You feel exhausted and unmotivated to work hard.
And what do you think happens to your wife's self-esteem?
69% of American men and 40% of women view pornography in a given year.
The adult and pornography website industry in the United States was on track to match the NCAA's revenue at $1.15 billion (2023).
3. Limit video games.
Video games have three phases:
1) This game is very fun, I really enjoy it.
2) I play video games after work to de-stress and distract myself.
3) I don't even know why I'm playing this game.
Between 1.7% and 10% of the American population suffers from video game addiction.
The average age of a video game addict is 24 years old.
4. Stop using drugs.
All forms of addiction have a common biological basis: an alteration of the neural circuits that regulate the balance between pain and pleasure.
Drugs produce a huge dopamine spike that leads to an even bigger crash.
That's why you feel so bad when it wear
Since 2000, more than 700,000 people have died from excessive drug use.
The federal budget for drug control in the United States in 2020 was a staggering $35 billion.
5. Avoid stress.
Dopamine is a currency.
When it is high, we feel motivated and happy.
When it is low, we feel unmotivated, sad and stressed (feeling exhausted and with knots in the stomach).
Dopamine regulation is the key.
Craving and desire are the basis of stress and fear.
Increased long-term stress has affected well-being, with an increase in chronic diseases.
(Among Americans ages 35 to 44, the percentage rose from 48% in 2019 to 58% in 2023.)
6. Avoid gambling.
Dopamine plays a crucial role when it comes to gambling.
Dopamine is released in response to the anticipation and outcome of the activity, creating a cycle of craving and reward.
All gambling websites offer some kind of bonus when you sign up.
I wonder why
The gaming industry is also an important cog in the U.S. economy, with domestic gross gaming revenue (GGR) set to reach $66.65 billion by 2023.
Casino slots and table games will generate three-quarters of total GGR in 2023.
7. Limit digital technology.
You are playing with your time.
Social media channels work the same way as slot machines.
Every post you like is a winning combination.
However, the greatest amount of dopamine is released during the “chase” for the next funny post.
Approximately 10% of Americans are addicted to social media.
That translates to 33.19 million Americans (based on 2021 population data).
