Howard Lutnick just marched Trump’s economic agenda straight into enemy territory—CNN.

Dana Bash tried to play economist and corner him with the usual “tariffs hurt Americans” script.

But Lutnick didn’t flinch.

He pushed back hard—and dropped a stat so staggering, even CNN couldn’t spin it.

🧵 THREAD

👆And, as always, remember to bookmark this thread.

Lutnick just dismantled the CNN narrative live on air.

Let’s roll the clips and break it down.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick came to CNN with a warning—and a number that stopped the conversation cold.

We cannot afford to continue with the status quo.

“America has a $1.2 trillion trade deficit,” he said.

“That means other people are selling US goods, more than we are selling them. And that’s just not balanced. It’s not fair.”

He didn’t stop there.

“We’re losing $1.2 trillion a year, of which directly and indirectly to China. That’s about $1 trillion.”

For Lutnick, this isn’t just an economic figure—it’s a threat to the country’s long-term strength.

“It’s just unsustainable for $1.2 trillion to be exported to the rest of the world… it’s building them up, and over time it’s taking us down.”

That, he explained, is why President Trump is turning to tariffs, not as punishment, but as leverage.

“The idea is the president wants balanced and fair trade, and tariffs are the tool to create balanced and fair trade.”

Dana Bash wasn’t convinced.

She shifted the focus to inflation, claiming that Trump’s 2017 tariffs had driven up prices for American consumers.

But Lutnick pushed back, turning the spotlight on President Biden’s record instead.

“Oh no no no! Don’t talk about the Biden inflation.”

He reminded Bash—and the audience—that tariffs had already been in place under Trump, and there were no widespread complaints.

“We have 25% tariffs that were set on under President Trump’s first term. I don’t hear a SINGLE word, not a single word about those tariffs—No consumers in America sit here complaining about those tariffs.”

When Bash insisted, “Prices have gone up,” Lutnick responded with a clean rebuke.

“Oh no no no! Don’t talk about the Biden inflation. That’s another whole gig. When we left—President Trump in 2019 had the lowest inflation in history.”

The point, Lutnick said, is that competition works.

“So you know, that this works really, really well. It works well. These countries and the businesses have to compete. They have to cut prices. You’ve seen it.”

Now, back to the story you came for.

Bash kept swinging—repeating CNN’s go-to line: “Tariffs are paid by the American consumer.”

Lutnick didn’t just disagree. He dismantled it.

“Well, I disagree with that, you know.”

Bash scrambled to defend herself: “Well… okay. But… many… most economists… I would say, disagree with you on that. We have seen it being passed off time and time again to the American consumer.”

Lutnick didn’t let it slide.

“Don’t buy the silly arguments that the U.S. consumer pays.”

“Businesses, their job is to try to sell to the American consumer, and domestically produced products are not going to have that tariff.”

That’s when Bash asked: “So who’s going to eat the tariff?”

Lutnick answered without hesitation:

“So the foreigners are going to finally have to compete, they’re going to have to compete.”

“What happens is the businesses and the countries primarily eat the tariff.”

Another blow landed.

As the interview wrapped, Lutnick pulled back the curtain on what this fight is really about—and why it matters for the future.

“You saw the rates that were published on Liberation Day. Those countries can take those rates down, if they open their markets to Americans to export!”

He explained the mission: give American businesses a fair shot abroad, or face consequences.

“Let Americans get their stuff on these foreign governments and foreign consumers shelves, and we'll be better as a country.”

For too long, he said, America has played nice while everyone else played dirty. That era is over.

“I think what's happened is we just have never felt the fairness of our ability to export. Finally, the president, the United States is on our side.”

And the momentum, Lutnick said, is just beginning.

“And that's what you're going to see in the UK and then country after country, we're going to announce, like we did with the UK, how many tens of billions of dollars of new opportunity the president is negotiating for American small businesses and medium sized businesses to sell their products overseas.”

He ended with a fearless prediction about the future for the American economy:

“That's the golden age that's coming. And everybody else is going to build in America to get around that tariff. Remember, there's no tariff if you build it in America.”
