UN’s shipping agency wants a worldwide net-zero tax that would slap U.S. ships with huge fees, raise energy costs, & hand China a competitive edge.
Trump’s team just sent a warning: Back the plan, face retaliation.

2/ The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will vote in October on a “net-zero by 2050” plan for shipping.
It includes:
⚓ Mandatory global fuel standards
⚓ A carbon pricing scheme across the entire industry
⚓ Heavy penalties for noncompliance
3/ Translation: If your ship doesn’t burn expensive, “green” fuel — you pay.
These costs will hammer:
📦 U.S. imports & exports
🛳 American cruise lines
💡 Energy transport
And they give China a free pass while crippling U.S. innovation in LNG & biofuels.
Because of course.
4/ The Trump administration says NO WAY.
Secretaries Rubio, Lutnick, Wright, and Duffy issued a joint statement:
“We will not tolerate any action that raises costs for U.S. citizens, energy providers, or shipping companies.”
5/ They warn:
🇺🇸 This is a global carbon tax on Americans.
🇨🇳 It hands a strategic advantage to China.
⚠️ It blocks tech where the U.S. leads — liquefied natural gas, biofuels — in favor of fuels not even widely available.

6/ The Trump Team's message to IMO members:
Support this plan and “we will not hesitate to retaliate or explore remedies for our citizens.”
Translation: Expect tariffs, sanctions, or other hard countermeasures.
7/ Why it matters: The IMO’s plan is the first in the world to combine mandatory emissions limits and a carbon pricing system across an entire sector.
Once in place, it’s global law for all ships over 5,000 tons.
8/ Bottom line: The October vote will decide whether the IMO becomes a back door for a global carbon tax.
Trump’s warning is clear: Back it, and America hits back harder.
