How to Actually Get 30–40+ MPG in a Real Gas-Powered Car 🚗 without having a hybrid
Most people think 25–28 mpg is “good” for a gas sedan or SUV. I regularly see 38–42 mpg in my 2017 Buick Regal 2.0T turbo on the highway. Here’s what actually moves the needle (not just “drive slower”).

Cruise in the highest gear possible at 45–55 mph whenever safe/legal. My 9-speed drops into 9th gear around 50–52 mph. RPM falls to ~1300–1500. Instantaneous mpg jumps to 40+.🔑⚙️

If your car has a tach (tachometer) that lets you see your vehicle's engine speed, Get on the freeway and take it up to about 65, speed limit permitting, then slow down until your tach is about 1100-1200 RPM. You'll be getting the best mileage in your top gear.😃

Use cruise control. Studies have found that by using cruise control, your mileage can improve by 7-14%.

Eliminate “micro-braking.” Coast to red lights instead of riding the brakes.
Anticipate stops 10–15 seconds ahead. 🚥
One-footed driving (accelerator only until you need to brake) saves a surprising amount.

Try to time traffic lights so that you don't have to come to a complete stop.
You'll save a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle and save a lot of fuel too!

Don't tailgate. Drive 3-5 seconds – minimum – behind the vehicle in front of you.
This will save you from having to break as often, saves fuel and is much more relaxing.

Underinflated tires rob 5–10% mpg. Rotate every 5–7k miles.

Modern turbos with knock sensors are fine on regular — premium rarely adds real-world mpg.
