Russia knows it can’t create a second Ukrainian SSR. Its goal is the destruction of Ukraine — “Novorossiya,” LNR/DNR, “Malorossiya.”
Signs of genocide are clear, including deporting children, Ukrainian Institute of National Memory head Oleksandr Alfyorov for Ukrainska Pravda.1/
Alfyorov: “In Ukraine, Russia needs only two resources: history and children.”
Russia uses history as a weapon — through “Novorossiya,” “LNR,” “DNR,” “Malorossiya,” and the myth of a “fight against Nazism” to justify occupation and erase Ukrainian statehood.
2/
Alfyorov: “Russians violate territories with their markers and people.”
They glorify Soviet generals, invent imperial continuity, and turn memory into a tool that normalizes war, borders, and violence.
3/
Alfyorov: “The abduction of children and attempts to turn them into mankurts are typical imperial actions.”
Occupation authorities deport Ukrainian children, force adoptions in Russia, change names, language, and school programs, and sever ties with Ukraine.
4/
Alfyorov: “Since 2014, more than 50,000 toponyms have been decommunized.”
During the full-scale war, Ukraine changed another 25,000.
In Kyiv alone, nearly 400 names tied to Russian and Soviet domination were replaced.
5/
Alfyorov: “Origin is not a universal marker.”
Tchaikovsky carried an imperial cultural template. Admiral Makarov shaped science, not mass identity.
6/
Alfyorov: “Russians no longer plan any ‘Ukrainian SSR 2.0.’”
They now seek the total destruction of Ukrainian subjectivity, through memory, schools, and children taken from their families.
7/
Alfyorov: “Right now, Russia wants children and history from Ukraine.”
Ukraine’s response must be active: name things clearly, teach history, protect children. This decides whether Ukraine survives as a nation.
