Those that watch old movies, perhaps will remember what a boarding house is. But to explain what it is for everyone else…..
1)
A Boarding House was generally a large older home or building where the owners, usually older and in need of extra income, would rent out rooms, provide utilities, communal meals at least three times a day, for minimal rent. Often residents would share chores.
2)
Most often a Boarding House would be sort of something between a retail deal and a family, but providing many of the comforts (friendship, caring, responsibility) one associates with family.
3)
For people moving to a new town where they had no relatives, until they could find and afford something on their own, for those being evicted from homes or apartments because they fell on hard times, for people that might have otherwise been homeless.
4)
A Boarding House Program, in every state, would provide a solution to several serious problems in the USA today.
1. A solution for older couples who can manage a house and have additional income.
5)
2. A solution for people moving alone to a new city, far from family, seeking work, increasing job flexibility without great expense.
3. A solution for those who, because of rising expenses or other temporary financial issues, found themselves temporarily homeless.
6)
4. A solution to the kind of loneliness and isolation that is becoming more and more endemic to American life.
Because, you see, Boarding Houses created sort of a family atmosphere, a feeling where all the tenants had reasons to be concerned for one another & for the house.
7)
Chores shared, entertainment started (by those who want it), a place that is more than a place just to be. Minimal rent.
The mechanics and the financing can be worked out. Referrals to the Boarding Houses can be worked out.
Something to think about."
