Three months ago, a patient died in our ER. What he did in the hours before reaching us still makes me shudder.
A 35-year-old shouldn’t die from a snake bite in 2026. He died because he followed myths instead of science.
Don’t let your "first aid" be the thing that kills you 🧵
The "Action Movie" Myth 🔪
The patient tried to cut and suck the venom out.
Don't ❌
• Cutting: Causes massive bleeding and local tissue necrosis.
• Sucking: Introduces mouth bacteria, leading to secondary infections.
You waste the "Golden Hour" playing hero.
The Tourniquet Trap 🚫
Stop using tight ligatures/tourniquets.
They often cut off arterial blood, leading to gangrene and limb loss. Worse, releasing them can cause a "venom burst" to the heart.
✅ Use a Pressure Immobilization Bandage or a simple splint instead.
The Identification Trap 🐍
He wasted 1 hour trying to catch the snake to show the doctor.
STOP. We don't need the snake; we treat the symptoms. Chasing it only increases your heart rate (pumping venom faster) and risks a second bite.
If you can, take a quick photo from afar.
The Fatal Delay ⏳
He spent another 2 hours at a local healer using herbs.
In snake bites, Time = Life. Herbs won’t stop kidneys from failing or lungs from paralyzing. Only Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) works.
If you aren't at an ER, you aren't being treated.
The Survival Protocol ✅
If bitten:
1️⃣ Freeze: Keep the victim still.
2️⃣ Splint: Immobilize the limb like a broken bone.
3️⃣ Remove Jewelry: Rings/watches become "strangle-wires" during swelling.
Get to the ER immediately.
🚨 Thousands still die from snakebites due to misinformation. Education is the only real antidote to fear.
