Autumn on the WA coast is the best time for ocean kayaking. Low swell & light winds, much more consistently than summer.
But the dark clouds of AUKUS threaten the fragile environment of the Shoalwater Marine Park, immediately adjacent to Garden Island's Stirling Naval Base. 🧵
Shoalwater Marine Park is a significant breeding and feeding ground for fairy penguins, sea lions*, bottlenose dolphins, and nesting colonies of multiple species of sea birds.
*(also regularly features predators of the above. 🦈)
It is also a world renowned nursery for hammerhead sharks.
Although the sealions seem fairly unconcerned about sharks most days.
The expansion of the Stirling naval base (barely 1500m away) currently underway will host Australia's future non-existent nuclear submarines,..... and no doubt any *other* AUKUS subs that may wander into the Indian Ocean to discharge their toxic cargo.
Look at the shallows 💙
The inevitable environmental contamination will just be tough luck for the Marine Park, hey Albo? :((
