🧵 THREAD: I’m getting bored of hearing our losses were about what Labour didn’t do or is yet to do in power.
Let me be clear: voters switched on us because of what Labour HAS DONE in power.
They judged us for betraying our values through our actions. That came from the top.
What came up on the doorstep was Starmer and when probed this was a local election they said it’s all relative
- Winter Fuel
- Disability Cuts
- Gaza
- Vile Immigration Rhetoric
- Not funding councils
- Social Care
No matter what we did locally.
Residents, decent people saying “we know you’re a good Cllr but we need to send a message….”
The amount of people who did that to some of my former colleagues was too many.
Lifting the 2 Child Cap maybe something the party promotes as a demonstration of action.
But voters remember the very people who gloat about it now, voted against it months before.
Suspended MPs who voted for it.
It was right to u-turn but voters can’t be gaslit.
Own it.
There are now councils in total chaos. Vital services at risk that residents desperately need.
Good local Councillors who understood their communities - gone.
Decades of hard-work shaping services to serve residents with our values - gone.
No one had a mandate to enable that
Local Government is about delivering our values in our communities.
Local people representing local people.
I’m now one of the only a handful of ethnic minority Cllrs in Haringey, a borough proudly multicultural.
Think about that.
People obsessed with factionalism, I’m a left-winger + proud to be one.
I folded Labour leaflets at 8 years old. Campaigned for Twigg at 17/18. I’ve served various roles in the party for 15 years.
There are many like me who have stayed despite being made to feel unwelcomed
The McCarthyism would even be too much for Joseph McCarthy himself
Many Councillors didn’t stay silent out of fear, they remained stoic because they believed in what they were able to deliver locally was worth the pain of silence.
For many they now have nothing to lose.
I’m backing @AndyBurnhamGM not because of factions, because my party can only be saved by someone outside of the PLP.
You had your time, you planned this since 2015 + you failed. Destroyed our party along the way.
The movement is always bigger than one person’s ego.
All those saying we can’t change Leader now because of… it’s exactly why we need to.
I don’t know what world issues people think the current Leadership is preventing or what national issues need the retention?
Parallel universe!
The strategy to reaffirm Reform ideology, won Reform seats.
The strategy to simultaneously attack Socialist ideology, won Green seats.
Literally dishing out our broad church voter base like an executors of our will.
With no mandate to do so.
Being part of this party is not a gift given by a select few.
You can’t be a true Leader through bullying people
THIS IS MY PARTY. And its values are worth fighting for.
If you choose a person over our collective values, you’re part of the problem.
Is Burnham perfect? No, but he’s Labour. Is Streeting perfect? No, but he’s Labour.
If they lead collectively with the whole movement including Unions.
You can’t understand unless you understand the concept of the Labour Party. Not just turn up to a top job.
Those that are signing letters to maintain the status quo, despite their own constituencies putting them on notice…
Read the rulebook, our purpose is to Govern with our values. To Govern, you must win the electorate.
I’m staying to win, loyal to party not person
