1/ Who Is Powering The World’s Green Future?

2/ In 2021, I published an essay titled: Will America’s Green Future Be Red? It predicted that the world’s ambitious clean energy transition would be driven by China. Specifically, it stated my bet that for the next decade and as far beyond as any eye can see, the leading manufacturer, exporter, and user of green technologies would be China.

4/ See this week’s Wall Street Journal article highlighting China’s essential monopoly over a critical item for renewable energy: energy storage batteries.

5/ Who is the No. 1 supplier of battery cells? Answer: China.

6/ Who are the top 10 suppliers of battery cells? Answer: Chinese companies. Chinese companies supply 90% of the battery storage systems installed on the planet—including in the US.

7/ Five years ago, China had 4GW of battery storage capacity. Today, it has 150GW. That is 3 times more than No. 2—which is the US.

8/ Looking ahead, in the US, AI data center developers are facing a rising tide of resistance to increasing demands for electricity. In contrast, China has announced plans to double its energy storage capacity to 300GW in the next 4 years and has mandated that 80% of the electricity powering new data centers come from renewables.
