Interesting perspective on current situation and how to respond. Advises those with means to leave US. (Scroll up for full thread).
1/
Though I believe it's wise for people to prepare escape plans, I fundamentally disagree with any call for mass migration as a policy.
2/
First, it ignores reality. Who would take all of us? Even if those leaving are educated with some financial resources,
3/
It would be incredibly difficult for host economies to adapt to such a large influx of people, assuming they had any desire to host us.
4/
It would also be difficult to retain one's wealth. Most Americans' wealth is tied up in their homes. Who would buy them if many selling?
5/
Even liquid accounts could pose a problem, since a mass shift to foreign currency would devalue the dollar,
6/
and mass withdrawal of funds from banks could trigger runs and bank failures (and I wouldn't count on FDIC rescue in this case).
7/
Then there's the issue of community and empathy. The people most likely to suffer under GOP-fascist state are poor, POC, marginalized.
8/
Most people in these categories (excluding wealthy / famous POC) have little choice about whether to stay or leave. What about them?
9/
Honestly, I believe we'd be doing the GOP an enormous favor by leaving en masse. They could take over our devalued assets and fully
10/
implement their vision of a white, racist, Christian, authoritarian dystopia ruled by sociopath oligarchs - without any real opposition.
11/
The thing is, we could accomplish the goals in @Professing_Prof 's thread, not by leaving, but by staying and *withdrawing our consent*.
@Professing_Prof Leaving plays into GOP's cynical attempts to divide us. We must stay as allies; we are #StrongerTogether
13/
@Professing_Prof We have the power to stop US descent into fascism.
We must organize around #StrategicNonviolentAction .
14/
@Professing_Prof Right now you might be asking yourself "What is #StrategicNonviolentAction ?"
It's the only method of that has allowed citizens to
15/
@Professing_Prof topple dictators *and* restore democracy without relying on foreign states.
It works by strategically withdrawing support and obedience
16/
@Professing_Prof by key groups in the population.
Done right, it can remove a regime's sources of power, such as
authority, skills, materials, people.

@Professing_Prof The situation is dire, and time is short. DM me or @NewLeafHank if you'd like to learn more.
I'll END with this:
@Professing_Prof @NewLeafHank P.S. I want to end by stating that this is not meant as an attack on @Professing_Prof , whose opinion I value greatly. Just my thoughts
1/
@Professing_Prof @NewLeafHank on why I don't think that approach would work, and why I've been advocating for another approach. I value any arguments to the contrary.
