The people of God are in captivity in Babylon because of their sin. This is the context in which Jeremiah writes the Words below.
It’s so important to look at their situation, because I believe that we as God’s people find ourselves in a similar situation!
Even when it’s not about our sin at the moment, we live in a fallen world among our enemies, or those who don’t share our faith, and our hope! We too are to wait for the fulfillment of the Word of God for us!
I’ve heard it said that each of the churches in Revelation not only represent literal churches in history, but they can also represent different types of churches in the world, different types of Christians, & different ages of the church throughout history!
If this is true, I believe we are living in the last age, the age of the church at Laodicea!
The church at Laodicea, much like the church today was focused on their wealth, and had become worldly. They were described as lukewarm, and it was detestable to LORD!
Thinking themselves to be rich, they were really poor, especially spiritually! And the LORD warned them that He was about to spit them out of His mouth!
False prophets and teachers have always told God’s people what they want to hear!
No need to walk fully in the command of the LORD, you will be blessed, no calamity will come upon you! God understands why you must walk in rebellion to His Word!
The means of obtaining your position will justify the end! You’re doing it for the greater good! You’re doing it to help God’s people!
The people of God are meant to be a peculiar people! We are meant to stand out in stark contrast to a world filled with evil! A world filled with those who seek to please their fleshly desires!
Titus 2:13-15
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
1 Peter 2:9-11
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;
Proverbs 14:34
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
Deuteronomy 4:1-8
Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
Ye shall not add unto the Word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
So many scoff at the Word of God! Speak kind and loving words they say! Don’t be so negative and judgmental!
Speak to us of peace and good to come! We’re weary of hearing Words of reproof and rebuke!
Paul warned Timothy that the time would come when people would not endure sound doctrine — Words from the Word of the LORD addressing the things in our lives and in our world!
2 Timothy 4:3-4
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
