Let me tell you a story about freeze dried minnows and my three cats.
Typically when I buy treats, not all our cats will like them. The clerk at our local Mud Bay even warned me that none of his cats liked them. I took three samples home, one for each cat the first day. 1/
Now, they like bonito flakes, so I was hoping they’d also like minnows. I sought out each cat individually, opening a sample bag, and laying them out.
Hermes gobbled them up, but he’l eat anything. I’ve stopped him from eating lint.
Ember devoured them almost as swiftly. 2/
Even Miss Charlotte ate them, though she took her time to savor each one, and by then the boys had caught on that I had more. I had to stand guard while she ate to keep them from stealing her share.
The minnows were a hit! But then the cats looked up at me with an unsettling 3/
and insistence I’d never seen from them before. They demanded more. For twenty minutes they followede around demanding more minnows.
I returned to the store the next day to buy a bag, but that first bag only lasted three days. When I went back a third time, 4/
the clerk suggested the large bag meant for dogs. Same product, more at a time.
My mistake was in leaving the resealed bag where I leave most of their treats—in a corner of the counter where we keep nuts and dried fruit.
The cats retrieved the bag and tore it open. 5/
I waited a week before buying another bag, and this time, I wasn’t going to let them eat the fish all in a day.
I gave them each a small handful and put the bag on the third shelf of an upper cabinet between the special soup bowls, closed the doors, and later went to bed. 6/
I suppose it’s my own fault for not recognizing their cleverness. Hermes may be new to the family, but we’ve had the other two for 7 and 8 years respectively.
In the morning, the bag lay in the center of the kitchen floor. The shredded center of the bag opened as though 7/
it had burst open from within. The plastic folded over like sunflower petals.
Somehow, they opened the cabinet, possibly from above, they retrieved the bag and tossed it down before rending it open. Not only had they eaten every minnow, their hunger was so great 8/
Their Greenies bag lay nearby in the same condition. They had consumed every cat treat they could find.
When I told the clerks at the store what had happened, one said, “Those cats earned their treats.”
And that’s why we now keep their treats in a locked cabinet. /9

I spent the last 14 minutes crying over this man. This man whom I’ve never met and knew nothing about until a few days before, when threats against his life were ignored. My teen held me, reading only the headline. [CW: graphic details of torture]
This is a tipping point. There has always been evil in the world, but right now, evil is in charge. Evil is spreading into the highest levels of government, not just in the U.S., but across the country. There is no one with significant power right now to keep it in check.
The largest military force in the world is in the hands of a corrupt, puerile man who thinks only of himself. When his ego isn’t fed, he lashes out in vicious, destructive ways that can harm millions of people. Or just one at a time. Like Jamal Khashoggi.
