Tuesday afternoon, my OB/GYN had the cops (2 officers) present for my office visit, because I wrote a bad Facebook review about them. The officers stood watching as my vitals were checked, my medical history was detailed, and then stood outside the exam door. #talkingaboutit
The Friday before, I called my OB/GYN for a refill on my Valtrex prescription. I've been living with genital herpes, HSV2, for 20 years, and I've been on suppressive therapy ever since. Monday night, CVS sent me a text saying my prescription refill was denied. #talkingaboutit
Tuesday morning, I called the office and asked why my prescription was denied. They stated they would not refill my prescription UNTIL I came in for a well-woman visit and exam. I tried to find a work-around to this policy, because I only had one pill left. #talkingaboutit
I spoke with 4 different women in the office: 2 receptionists, the scheduling coordinator, and the office manager. All 4 women put me on mute (not hold) and also on hold many times. 3 of the 4 women cold-transferred me to voicemail boxes in the middle of convos. #talkingaboutit
I explained to the staff that my urgency and persistence was valid: I was on my last pill, I get regular outbreaks, and if I don't take my Valtrex daily, I will have an outbreak almost immediately. #talkingaboutit
While outbreaks are little more than a slightly uncomfortable nuisance to me, they put my husband at a greater risk of contracting it. I take Valtrex to reduce outbreak frequency, duration, and severity, but also to reduce his risk by lowering viral shedding. #talkingaboutit
None of the women I spoke with seemed empathetic, and during 1 of the convos, I said, "Does anyone give a fuck that this is a big concern for me?" The woman asked me to stop cursing at her, and so that was the 1st and ONLY curse word I uttered to any of them. #talkingaboutit
Finally, the office manager offered to schedule an appointment for me at 1:45 that afternoon so that I could have a well-women physical and exam in order to get my prescription renewed. Defeated and discouraged, I agreed, and scheduled the appointment. #talkingaboutit
At noon, I decided to write a Facebook review, stating how I felt the service in the front office was subpar and fueled by a lack of empathy and stigma, yet I still liked the doctor I had seen 18months prior #talkingaboutit facebook.com/jenelle.marie.…
As an aside: it had been 18months since my last visit. However, I am 36. Annual paps are no longer required, I have the same partner, we are monogamous, I have no side effects, I give myself regular breast exams, and nothing has changed with my sexual health #talkingaboutit
According to ACOG and the FDA for Valtrex renewals, a well-woman visit and exam is not required. Yearly visits are suggested, but this is the 1st time, in 20 years of having this prescription, that I've ever been required to come in for a Valtrex renewal #talkingaboutit
Lastly, at no point, while talking to all 4 women, was an alternative option offered. I was told the prescription would not be renewed UNTIL I came in for an appointment. I was not offered the option of scheduling an appointment and receiving a temp prescription #talkingaboutit
Twenty minutes after I wrote the review, the office replied to my review with this: "Jenelle, we are very sorry we missed the mark. Someone from our office will be reaching out to you to get this issue resolved." No one contacted me. #talkingaboutit
When I arrived to my appointment, a little over an hour later, unbeknownst to me, they called the cops. At 1:35, I checked in, provided my ID, insurance card, and sat down quietly in the lobby. The office staff was expectedly cold, and there was very little said. #talkingaboutit
The police walked into the lobby at 1:40pm as I sat in my chair, wondering why they were there... Convinced that they must be there for some other reason. But I had a strange feeling that I should start documenting things. #talkingaboutit
The office manager brought the officers through the waiting room and into the clinic, and then a nurse called my name for my appointment. She walked me to the nurse's station, and the officers stood by as the nurse checked my vitals and discussed my medical histry #talkingaboutit
The nurse then brought me to the exam room, and the police officers followed, standing outside of my exam room for the entire duration of my appointment. Then the doctor walked in. #talkingaboutit
When the doctor walked in, I asked him why they felt they needed to have law enforcement outside my door. He said that the office staff saw my Facebook review and thought I would become hostile. #talkingaboutit
The doctor told me they were dismissing me, and he did not perform a well-woman visit or exam and stated he would only fill a temporary prescription since I would not promise to be under his care or commit to return to their office for additional services. #talkingaboutit
He left, I cried, called my husband, then began recording my exit, unsure if the officers were still outside having heard the entire consult, my tears, and my conversation with my husband, but wanting to document their presence, if so #talkingaboutit drive.google.com/file/d/1q6GKFY…
Then I recorded them leaving the office as I left, no longer a "threat" to the office and their patients (I never was... One time, in elementary school, though, I pulled another girl's braids on the playground.) #talkingaboutit drive.google.com/open?id=1Z24Qk…
One officer drove away immediately, and while I was catching my breath and trying to make sure I was clear-headed enough to drive, I recorded a Facebook Live. The other officer drove away during the Live #talkingaboutit facebook.com/jenelle.marie.…
The next morning (Wed), Wayne Women's Clinic, PA hid the review function on their Facebook page, in effect, hiding what they had done to me, and silencing all prior and subsequent reviews, good or bad #talkingaboutit facebook.com/WayneWomensCli…
Since the story aired on our local CBS affiliate, more than 10 women have come forward, sending me private inbox messages, sharing similarly horrific experiences with their staff #talkingaboutit cbs17.com/news/local-new…
Two hours ago, they made this post, reviews still hidden, obviously very worried about their reputation, but not at all interested in addressing the harm they've caused. No one from their office has contacted me. #talkingaboutit
