📸 from the aftermath of the #Woolseyfire, which has now spread to 70,000 acres, in Malibu
Found out my old softball coach stayed behind to save his house and “got his eyes messed up,” Mark Lukan, his neighbor who also stayed to fight for awhile, said.

“I was looking at the flames shooting up in the air and it looked like a monster taking over,” so he bailed
Many residents here have horses and only had an hour or so to evacuate. The roads were clogged and so they went to the beach for safety. Many animals were still there, tied up and eating their breakfast Saturday morning
Steve Lentz, an animal rescue volunteer, is here with Paw Works to come help the frightened evacuees. He lost his house in the Thomas Fire last year, so he understands the pain and shock
Steve said they’re trying to find the humans for these two llamas. One was left behind and one was found. The white one has some songs marks on his legs, he said
More sad Malibu llama content because we all need more llamas in our lives
/1 This was also crazy. I saw Cassandra Reyes and her dad rolling a car tire down the road this morning and then passed by them again. She said they hit a rock while trying to evacuate yesterday, got a flat tire, and then walked to the fire station for help.
Firefighters were slammed so they walked the 1.5 miles back to their home and rode out the fire. 6 am Saturday morning, they used an old truck tire and rolled it the 1.5 miles back to their car, changed it, and were able to leave. Cassandra is 15 and it’s just her and her dad ❤️
Little restaurant in Malibu again caught fire :(
From earlier today: while the winds have calmed, it’s still incredibly dry and spot fires keep popping back up in Malibu. These firefighters hopped out, ran over, and put out flames on this garden house thing
Here is a very good, but slightly stressed beach doggo. His humans can’t go home yet and are figuring out what to do
Fyi: There are many Malibu residents who lost homes/ stayed behind, some camped at Zuma Beach w/ animals. No power, water, food, cell service. 0 aid or resource groups on the ground rn bc roads are closed-If any press or groups are in the area and can bring food/water it’s needed
Firefighters and police also exhausted and would love some food donated if people are in the Malibu area. It’s a bit cut off from everything and sparse in terms of aid
Update: Some Red Cross volunteers at a #WoosleyFire shelter in Thousand Oaks gave me bars and water to bring in 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Update update: sheriff deputies here said they are clearing out Zuma beach camping spot and other residents tonight and imploring people to leave and go to area shelters or elsewhere so there should not be as many Malibu people here tomorrow am 🙏🏻
And some other good news. This firefighter on Malibu Canyon said that they took advantage of the quieter winds and have started making a fire line, which means they’re working on containment #WolseyFire
They were also very stoked for water

Update on LA fires: Data, photos, and video draw intense scrutiny over power equipment in #EatonFire and #HurstFire

SCE is investigating. It doesn't look like Pasadena Water and Power—the utility for a neighborhood right by Eaton cyn—didn't shut off power

This photo shows the #Eatonfire under a transmission tower in Altadena. Image
A resident who lives right by Eaton Canyon captured the moment the #EatonFire sparked right under the transmission tower on the east side of the canyon.

SCE has a 220KV transmission line in that canyon that was still energized at the time of ignition Image

On the ground for the #palisadesfire in Pacific Palisades.

The fire has erupted to 770+ acres. Winds are still strong.

My elderly dad lives less than a mile from here. These are my favorite mountains to run in. Always gutting reporting on my home burning.
Police told me the situation is “really bad” and a fire station on Sunset burned. They keep hanging to move their post east because “stuff keeps burning.” Image
#palisadesfire blew up again near Temescal and jumped Sunset into neighborhoods above Palisades High school. The winds have kicked up again, no visibility

I’ve been reporting on Hurricane Ian since it hit Florida in late Sept. The storm caused $112.9 billion in damage, the second-largest insured loss on record after Katrina. In Nov, I started hearing that something strange was happening with storm victims’ insurance claims…
Veteran independent insurance adjusters said their estimates were being significantly altered: photos deleted, descriptions of damage erased, and the final amounts reduced by over 80% .

They'd had issues with carriers before but never seen this behavior

washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
Hundreds of pages of claims & internal records I reviewed show big changes were being made to Hurricane Ian estimates without adjusters' knowledge or consent. I saw a $488,000 claim reduced to $13,000. Some were cut below deductibles, leaving residents with nothing

This is huge. The Forest Service is stopping ALL prescribed burns across the National Forest System—nearly 200M acres—bc of escapes

Prescribed burns are essential for wildfire management. So much so that FS wanted to burn 50M acres over the next 10 years fs.usda.gov/inside-fs/lead…
This decision comes after the USFS unveiled a robust new 10-year strategy to combat our wildfire crisis. However, prescribed fire takes skill, and due to staffing/hiring issues, they've had problems filling these experienced roles, firefighters told me.
fs.usda.gov/managing-land/…
While the New Mexico fire sparked from a prescribed burn, stopping them at the onset of what is looking to be another difficult fire season could have serious ramifications, experts say.

We need intentional burning and the people who know how to do them.

This is big. The US has released part of its first-ever investigation into its Indian boarding schools. They found:

From 1819-1969, 408 federal schools in 37 states

Marked or unmarked graveyards at 53 schools

Schools mostly focused on manual labor
bia.gov/sites/default/…
Here are some more notable findings from the Department of Interior's nearly year-long probe into this very horrific part of US history
This reckoning with our own cultural genocide has been a long time coming, but it triggers tremendous pain and trauma for survivors and their families.

I reported on why the US needs to establish wide-reaching mental and emotional health services.

Now over 4,900 people say they were hurt at Astroworld. Contemporary Services Corp., which helped lead security for that festival, also oversaw Dave Chappelle's show

CSC's been sued dozens of other times for negligence, injuries, and labor law violations
buzzfeednews.com/article/briann…
CSC is one of the largest event security companies in North America. It runs thousands of festivals, concerts, and sports games, and has contracted w/ massive venues and events: Coachella, the Super Bowl, presidential inaugurations, FIFA World Cups, huge universities like USC
However, it hires inexperienced people for minimum wage to work long shifts, and workers have complained about inadequate training for such big events. Some have gotten hurt. Most of them are hired as independent contractors, absolving CSC of liability in some cases.
