/ @Microsoft, we deserve better, and you can do better. Taking Windows Updates shouldn't feel like we're playing "Russian Roulette" with our computers. #windows10 @satyanadella #windowsupdate #russianroulette Image
/ And by "we" I mean that millions upon millions of average consumers using -- or trying to use -- Windows 10 today. Big businesses appear to have your ear, but it's the lowly home and small biz user that I hear from.
/ They feel unheard, and uncared for in your priorities. I know that's not the case, but @Microsoft, they deserve better ... much better ... than the what Windows releases and updates are turning out to be.
/ I have specific suggestions for you. Here's what "better" looks like:
/ A: Return control to the user — all control, to all users. Allow all editions of Windows to defer any and all updates indefinitely. Updates are seen as a risk greater than the security issues they supposedly address.
/ B: Let all computer users choose if, when, and which updates should be installed. Period. Encourage updates, educate, and most important: build a track record of trust. But never force.
/ C: Stop feature updates completely -- say for 12 months. Focus on stability and security, at least until you improve your track record. You're clearly trying to do more than your release process can handle.
/ D: Focus on quality. Everyone says they focus on quality, but the last major Windows updates have had more issues than is tolerable. They've not been quality releases.
/ E: Open up, apologize, and mean it. Promise to do better, AND THEN DO BETTER. @Microsoft, you need to re-earn our trust. It’s time to be open and honest and take responsibility for the mistakes made along the way.
/ Windows — yes, even Windows 10 — is awesome. It’s an amazing feat of engineering. But your recent track record is seriously tarnishing those accomplishments.
/ @Microsoft, you can do better. From individuals to families, organizations, and corporations, we need you to do better. We want to trust you again. Russian Roulette is no fun.
/ Don't just listen to me: see what my readers have been saying here when I first published the article that lead to this tweetstorm: askleo.com/microsoft-we-d…
