Creating mocks to feature our partners on Surf Trip List. I’ll update here every 30 mins with a photo of where I’m at.

1 hr 30 mins πŸ‘‡

First minimal sketch is starting to take form.

I'm stuck on how people can navigate the map.

World view is fine partner locations bc we have <100.

But if you add surf spots to world view map becomes a cluster fβ€”.

Need filter by continent/region...(?) Image
2 hr πŸ‘‡

Splitting into Map and List view.

List will be easier to launch ASAP. Map can come next.

Got idea by going back and reviewing how Ikon Pass' website works.

Things still feel very open ended in my brain. Need a better vision of end product. ImageImageImage
2 hr 30 min πŸ‘‡

Trying to keep things simple. Think we can use Partner Destination pages also as our Alerts # Show page.

People can see all the Partners within each Partner Dest at any time.

It shows on our Alerts # Index page when cheap flight is available. ImageImageImage
3 hr πŸ‘‡

Need to talk with backend dev.

Want to ensure changing Partners # Index to Partner Locations # Index is possible and within scope.

Slacked & explained it in our GH Issue. Provided list of all partner locations with coords (made 2-weeks ago).

Began Partners #Show ImageImageImageImage
4 hr πŸ‘‡

Chatted with Dylan.

We need to attach a Partner to their relevant Destination. (The missing piece!)

Once we do that, we can create the Partner Locations # Index List page using our existing Destinations (They were the same!)

This page: Image
Then what we thought was Partners # Show page actually becomes a Destination # Show page.

Within it are our flight alerts, stay and surfboard pick up partners.

This page... Image
That page over takes our old concept of creating a new Alert Page every time we find a cheap flight.

Instead, now we have one page for each destination that just updates whenever we find a cheap flight to that destination. πŸŽ‰
Four hours in and I finally feel like I've got a set direction! πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ

Now it's time to create the NEW Destination # Show page that updates when we find new flights or get new partners.
4.5 hr πŸ‘‡

Finally, for the first time you can actually see and feel the flow!πŸ•Ί

This whole thread probably made no sense until looking at these images.

Next: Clean up Destination # Show mock so it's relevant to each account_level. ImageImageImage
Breaking for lunch, a walk and a podcast. πŸ₯—πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸŽ§
Starting back up. Wifi is down.

Giving up on Wifi at home. Walking to coffee shop.
Ok, finally done.

Here are the final wireframes! ImageImageImage
Here's the wireframe in checklist format: Image
Here's my communication with & checklists for Dylan & Matt in the GH Issue. ImageImageImage
This whole process took longer than I expected.

I could have easily built 2 new pages: a list of partners & a page showing each of their details

But what surfers care for first is - Finding where to go

Once they see that, then they want to know about flights, stays, boards..
It was hard to transition my mind from "What we planned to build" to "What our customer would want us to build"

I came up with two pages:

Page 1. Lists all the destinations we support, and
Page 2. Shows the flights, stays and board partners available at each destination
This is a big deal for us because we no longer need to create a new Deal page every time we find a flight.

Instead these pages last forever. They are updated anytime we find a cheap flight or add a new hand-selected partner. We'll likely add local tips & more to these pages too
I tried hard to keep my devs in mind by creating a mock that used their existing work and fit as easily as possible with the existing code.

Thinking like an engineer while building this was probably the biggest slow down.

But!...
I'm 100% sure that this extra thought will take out numerous "back-and-forth"s as the build it.

Chatting with Dylan (backend) was probably one of the most helpful things I did.

And that's it for the mocks. I'll post links once this is live! πŸ‘‹

923 days ago, it was day 1 of learning to code.

I was watching @levelsio's How to Bootstrap a Business video

His words stopped me

"To build your idea, learn to code.

Just Google, How to make a website.

Business and coding is about learning how to figure things out yourself" Image
So 923 days ago, I did what Pieter said.

I wanted to build a site with travel deals to the world's best waves.

So I literally typed "How to build a website" into Google

and I began learning to code.

Here's me literally doing it.

Image
I did this for 3-4 days.

Then I began to get massively stuck.

So I asked a friend.

She told me to learn HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Javascript and Jquery in that order.

And to do it using @ryancarson's @treehouse courses.

So that's what I did. Image

1/ I live-recorded a customer interview I did today.

I'm trying to find a problem to solve in the hiring space.

Here's the audio:

I was far from perfect.

Listening back, here's how I would have improved:
2/ I should have started by asking her an open-ended question like,

"What's your day-to-day like?"

From there I could keep the convo going with pain funnel questions.

Here are examples from the Sandler Sales method: Image
3/ I also should have followed @robfitz's The Mom Test more...

The method helps to ensure people don't lie to you in interviews just to make you feel good.

Here's a summary of how to do it wrong: Image

I'm getting a one-time bonus tomorrow!

while no one else is.

I'm 99% sure it's bc of a time management strategy I've created inside @SlackHQ .

Here's how I do it.

Thread. Image
Let me take you back

to my first day of work.

On that day, I created a new Slack channel and I invited only my boss and boss's boss to it.

I called # rk-logbook.

and each morning I post my to-do list there.

Here's mine from yesterday. Image
As the day goes by,

I update how each task is going using emojis.

My boss LOVES this.

It gives her a real-time view of what I'm doing every day.

Each emoji has it's own meaning.

Here's the list I use: Image

If you want a dev job, you've got to stand out.

Good news is, you can.

Here's five ways you can stand out:

1/ Build a small project for the company.

Thread. Image
2/ Find the recruiter. Message them directly. Image
3/ Write simple, descriptive accomplishments.

(Here's 185 action verbs that'll make your resume pop.)

1/ When I start a startup

it's never a straight line.

NEVER.

Remote Dev Jobs is 30 days old

and it's already changed a ton.

Here's a thread showing:

1. each phase change (so far)
2. why I made the change
3. the importance of starting
2/ My first goal was to find a "value gap" in the market

I looked at lots of remote job sites

The gap I found? Using images

No other job site used images +

human's process images ~60,000x faster than text

I'll admit, the idea is royally stupid lol

t-sciences.com/news/humans-pr… Image
3/ I sketched and coded it, and the UI felt super clunky.

I'd want to tweak an idea

(like adding multiple jobs under a company listing)

but the photos felt in the way.

I need simplicity

so I scrapped it entirely

and I began looking at UIs devs use daily. Image

I'm building this! πŸ›

A job's board for remote developers.

It's finally starting to feel real. πŸ’– Image
Here's what I've done for the mobile layout ImageImageImageImage
One to two hours every day.

Before and after work.

I'm not killing myself to get it done. I'm taking it one step at a time.

Getting my first customer may not happen fast.

But it will happen.

Having a job while I do this makes me slower, but it makes me feel indestructible.πŸ’ͺ
