923 days ago, it was day 1 of learning to code.

I was watching @levelsio's How to Bootstrap a Business video

His words stopped me

"To build your idea, learn to code.

Just Google, How to make a website.

Business and coding is about learning how to figure things out yourself" Image So 923 days ago, I did what Pieter said.

I wanted to build a site with travel deals to the world's best waves.

So I literally typed "How to build a website" into Google

and I began learning to code.

Here's me literally doing it.

1/ I live-recorded a customer interview I did today.

I'm trying to find a problem to solve in the hiring space.

Here's the audio:

I was far from perfect.

Listening back, here's how I would have improved: 2/ I should have started by asking her an open-ended question like,

"What's your day-to-day like?"

From there I could keep the convo going with pain funnel questions.

Here are examples from the Sandler Sales method: Image

I'm getting a one-time bonus tomorrow!

while no one else is.

I'm 99% sure it's bc of a time management strategy I've created inside @SlackHQ .

Here's how I do it.

Thread. Image Let me take you back

to my first day of work.

On that day, I created a new Slack channel and I invited only my boss and boss's boss to it.

I called # rk-logbook.

and each morning I post my to-do list there.

Here's mine from yesterday. Image

If you want a dev job, you've got to stand out.

Good news is, you can.

Here's five ways you can stand out:

1/ Build a small project for the company.

Thread. Image 2/ Find the recruiter. Message them directly. Image

1/ When I start a startup

it's never a straight line.

NEVER.

Remote Dev Jobs is 30 days old

and it's already changed a ton.

Here's a thread showing:

1. each phase change (so far)
2. why I made the change
3. the importance of starting 2/ My first goal was to find a "value gap" in the market

I looked at lots of remote job sites

The gap I found? Using images

No other job site used images +

human's process images ~60,000x faster than text

I'll admit, the idea is royally stupid lol

Shipped! First in over a year! 🎉

A blog for my fiancé — Here Now Body.

It illuminates how the power to heal lives inside us all.

Since quarantine, I've taught myself @reactjs, NextJS, @sanity_io and @tailwindcss on nights and weekends.

Here's how I did it... Image I owe 90% of my coding skills to @traversymedia. 🙏

I took all of Brad's free YouTube courses on React.

I then bought a few of his courses on Udemy.

Cost ~$50.

Been learning React (NextJS) for the last 2 months — before work and weekends

The goal: a blog for my fiancé to share her learnings from Physical Therapy school

I've nearly cried multiple times And been stuck for 7 straight days on a problem

Today I finished the template! It's the NextJS tutorial blog using Markdown as a headless CMS.

Instead of /post/[id] routes from the tutorial, it gives you /[category]/[id] routes.

And on the homepage you can show all posts related to a specific category.

Here it is! 🎉

Sketches from yesterday.

My goal is to build with constraints. So I have only 5 trxn categories:

1. Income
2. Spending
3. Loan
4. Investing
5. Ignore

The other option is to split a trxn. Image The other idea is to show net worth up to today.

Then to show a trend line of where you’re headed over the next 6 mos, yrs, 5 yrs, etc based on your last 180 days.

Got this amazing note from a past financial coaching client this week.

It brought tears to my eyes. Image For 3 years, I wrote about my take on personal finance:

thehiddengreen.com

The jist of my work was helping client's answer this q:

If money didn't exist, what would you do?

From there, we'd reverse engineer their lives from financial disarray to upward trajectory.

My GF is in Physical Therapy school and has an idea for an app where you pick the body problem you want to work on (slouching shoulders, low back pain, neck aches, etc.) and it notifies you every X mins with unobtrusive, easy, specific exercises while working at your computer. I'm going to build it out and update on my progress here.

To start, I'm going to see what similar products exist and take notes on reviews from past users.

Day 3: Handing our flyers/cards for Surf Trip List.

Heading into surf shops now... First one done.

The dude loved it. Said he’d be happy to have a small stack of cards at the front counter.

Super stoked.

I feel so much more confident than day one.

I definitely still got nervous, but that was 5x easier than my first shop two days ago.

Whew. On to the next!

Day 2: Giving our Surf Trip List flyers/cards to people.

I’m starting by just putting cards on cars and home doors in the Outter Sunset district of San Francisco. Strategically placing them.

On homes it’s the ones where wetsuits are hanging, there’s ocean decor in the windows.

On cars, it’s the ones with surf stickers, roof racks, etc.
