HISTORY: Super, long-time history nerd right here. I would love to see some projects like David Grann's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, Anna-Lisa Cox's THE BONE AND SINEW OF THE LAND, or David Randall's BLACK DEATH AT THE GOLDEN GATE. #mswl
Super, SUPER interested in books that explore women's history and tell me the stories left out of my school textbooks. Books like Margot Lee Shetterly's HIDDEN FIGURES, Denise Kiernan's THE GIRLS OF ATOMIC CITY, or Mallory O'Meara's THE LADY FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. #mswl
POP SCIENCE: I love pop science that takes me on a deep dive into a subject I don't know a lot about, or that takes a look at the scientists themselves. If you have something like Rob Dunn's NEVER HOME ALONE, Brian Keating's LOSING THE NOBEL PRIZE... #mswl
Steve Brusatte's THE RISE AND FALL OF THE DINOSAURS, Deborah Blum's THE POISON SQUAD, Sang-Hee Lee's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH HUMANKIND, or Nick Pyenson's SPYING ON WHALES, I'd love to see it. #mswl
MATERIAL CULTURE: The subject I studied in grad school, and a topic near and dear to my heart. Lara Maiklem's MUDLARK, Marilyn Johnson's LIVES IN RUINS, Glenn Adamson's FEWER, BETTER THINGS, and Samuel Redman's BONE ROOMS are all great examples. #mswl
TRAVEL / THE OUTDOORS / THE WORLD AT LARGE: Who doesn't love a good armchair exploration? Bonus points if it makes me laugh or combines travel with history. Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz are favorites of mine... #mswl
But I would love to see some projects that open up this space and give a wider perspective. Books like Rahawa Haile's forthcoming IN OPEN COUNTRY and Edward James Mills' THE ADVENTURE GAP are great examples. #mswl
MEMOIR: I'm interested in memoirs that have a really interesting hook like Rachael Hanel's WE'LL BE THE LAST ONES TO LET YOU DOWN. Sarah Smarsh's HEARTLAND bowled me over with its writing, and I'm looking forward to reading Casey Gerald's THERE WILL BE NO MIRACLES HERE. #mswl
