All but one of these families are STILL IN DETENTION, meaning the administration continues to violate federal policy w/each passing day and these families continue to suffer.
We've been telling their stories under #StoriesFromKarnes & will keep doing so. They're horrendous.
One father has been detained w/his 15 y/o son since Jan. 14—58 days.
His son is "sad & desperate." He hasn't spoken to his mother or sister in ages. He's been eating less.
Both have positive torture/persecution findings.
DHS hasn't told us why they're still imprisoned.
Another father has a 6 y/o son who "used to be a very active and friendly boy" but is now "depressed" & "feels the heaviness of this place."
The son's had stomach aches, fever, & a rash.
They were detained 41 days before being separated. They're now in different centers.
One 5 y/o has had indigestion, chicken pox, the cold, & a continuous cough since he & his father arrived at Karnes. Medicine isn't helping.
The pair was put in medical isolation for 4 days.
Since being detained, the son tells his dad: "Let’s go, Dad. Let’s get out of here."
The detention of children is a crime. The UN, medical & legal experts, whistleblowers inside DHS— all condemn it.
Even some Congress members have condemned it & called for the end of family detention.
We're calling for them to follow through: end this practice once & for all.
There is NO reason to detain these families. They are not a flight risk, they are not dangerous, they are not giving false information.
The 1994 Flores agreement is clear: You can hold a child a MAX of 20 days, & then only w/good reason.
We are violating civil rights at Karnes.
We demand that DHS release all the families it has held at Karnes for over 20 days. They have friends & family they can be released to. We must allow them to go free.
And we call on Congress to END family detention. Future generations will judge us for this cruel practice.
We have 24 dads currently detained for 20+ days (keep in mind, these are just our clients, could be more at Karnes).
One of them has an 18 month old, and 9 others have sons under 10.
Three of those sons under 10 celebrated birthdays while detained.
Yesterday we emailed requests to ICE for these families to be released.
This morning ICE told us they don't accept email requests.
We've been submitting requests like this for our clients detained at Karnes via email for 5 years and this is the first time they've told us that.
URGENT: We need you all to call Dan Bible, the head of @ICEgov for the San Antonio region: 202.200.7012.
Please ask Dan to release the families who've been in Karnes 20+ days.
@ICEgov One of our volunteers said that today in Karnes the dads reported that the children are sick b/c of the food, that they are throwing up and have diarrhea and fever.
The majority, if not all, of the children are sick.
@ICEgov A GEO guard told families: "if you don't like our food then you should just go back to Honduras."
Team,
Please call Dan Bible, head of @ICEgov for San Antonio region: 202.200.7012 and ask him to release the families who've been in Karnes 20+ days.

We are absolutely disgusted by the Biden Administration's decision to deport thousands of Haitians one month after the devastating earthquake and storm that resulted in 2,200 deaths and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. 🧵👇🏾
Families who lost everything to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake are now living through flash floods and mudslides. The destruction is large-scale and unprecedented, worsening Haiti’s already unstable political and social infrastructure.
Haiti is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change – and we can expect climate disasters to continue to devastate the nation in the years to come.
The Senate parliamentarian just recommended that a path to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, and Essential Workers should not be included in the budget reconciliation bill. We are disappointed to hear the news, but we know that this fight is far from over. 🧵👇🏾
We have spent decades fighting for a path to legalization for all undocumented immigrants in this country. We are not giving up now. Democrats in Congress can still keep their promise, without compromising on increased enforcement.
We expect them to use all the tools to get this done. They can do the following:
✅Dems can rework the legalization language and resubmit to the Parliamentarian;
✅Vice President Harris can overrule the parliamentarian;
We are extremely disappointed in the Biden Administration's decision to appeal the federal court ruling that would block #Title42. @POTUS has a moral obligation to stop using T42 to harm families and children seeking asylum.
It is immoral and inhumane.
Here's our statement:
We at RAICES have a front row seat to the horrors of Title 42. Our clients are stuck in Mexico. Families fleeing violence are turned away. U.S. and international Asylum law is flouted.
On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we honor the lives lost in the attack, but we also acknowledge the thousands of lives, especially immigrants, who have been affected since.
In addition to the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, approximately 801,000 people have been killed directly in the violence of the subsequent wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.
In the US, the violent backlash against anyone perceived as Muslim —whether actually Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, or Arab —has driven not only a string of attacks against these communities, but also paved way for the deplorable Muslim ban enacted in 2017.
Late last night, the 5th Circuit issued a 3-0 ruling denying the DOJ’s request for a stay. This ruling allows the Remain in Mexico Program known as the Migrant Protection Protocols, to go back into effect as early as tomorrow, Saturday.
MPP is a an abhorrent policy meant to cause the highest levels of suffering on people seeking asylum and safety for themselves and their families.
The program essentially destroyed the asylum process under the Trump administration, and now Judges that were appointed by that same administration are bringing it back.
We have a moral obligation to protect, evacuate, and resettle Afghan allies who served our nation as special contractors before it is too late. They and their families face the very real threat of torture and even death at the hands of the Taliban for their support of our troops.
More than 90% of RAICES refugee resettlement service recipients are Afghan SIV holders. Our team works with them to find housing, identify employment pathways, secure public benefits, and register their children in school and recently launched in-house mental health services.
RAICES has welcomed and resettled 116 Afghans –– including 79 children –– in the U.S. this year alone, and we are prepared to meet the current moment with deepened and expanded trauma-informed legal and social services.
