THIS WEEK THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE BECAME THE ENDGAME
Something really important happened this week: the German carmakers agreed that for the coming ten years, they will put all their cards on electric vehicles and they will not be shy about saying so anymore.

I think the rise of the electric vehicle (EV) was inevitable once it became clear that you could construct lightweight batteries that would outlast the car, while battery cost plus electricity would be much less than the cost of gasoline.

It's basically that simple.
Of course the success story behind that is the electric motor. It's basically the only alternative for the combustion engine that we know of and it's around four times more efficient. Oh and lighter, smaller, cheaper while not requiring maintenance.
Still, I've not been shy in saying history shows that market leaders seldom embrace the technology that will put their current cash-cows out of business. They usually go bankrupt. That's why @Tesla and @elonmusk where so important: they showed it could be done and sped things up.
But Tesla only produces few vehicles. We need the big boys on board. That's why it's so important that Ghosn showed leadership at Nissan and Renault. And that's why it's so important that China is now going all-out on EVs. But VW is still the biggest car maker in the world.
I was truly worried that the EU car market would pass up the opportunity to reshape itself. I now think #dieselgate hit Volkswagen so hard that it served as a rude but timely wake-up call. (beautifully captured by @Gardiner_Beth theguardian.com/environment/20…)
Which brings us to this week. On monday we learned that Diess, the CEO of @VWGroup "created division in the car industry" with his focus on EVs and charging infrastructure. He was "evaporating billions". Most German writers I read where horrified.

We learned it was actually "worse": Diess threatened Volkswagen would leave the powerful German car lobby VDA because VDA would not commit to an electric-vehicle-first strategy. VDA claimed there where many roads to Rome and the EV was just one.

This lead to heated talks with @BMW chef Harald Krueger. Krueger made very clear that BMW did not agree with Volkswagen faz.net/aktuell/wirtsc…
and it was interpreted as a collision course

But one day later the row was over. Diess reiterated that not choosing a technology ("technologieoffenheit") was the wrong message (businessinsider.de/vw-daimler-und…) and after a crisis phonecall on wednesday (handelsblatt.com/unternehmen/in…) they agreed:
The German car makers will say clearly that in the coming ten years, the electric vehicle should be the leading technology ("leittechnology"). And in a linkedin post Diess was crystal clear (ht @colinmckerrache) linkedin.com/pulse/leittech…
This, ladies and gentlemen is history in the making.

I think future history books will say this was when it became clear that age of the combustion engine was over and the age of the electric car truly began.

And for me it's the biggest told-you-so-moment of the last 10 years!
And for people making this @elonmusk/@Tesla vs @VWGroup: Elon liked this thread praising VW and Diess because he knows this is not about carmaker vs carmaker but about EVs vs big oil, about 'trying to be useful' and about leaving this planet in good shape for our children.

The premise of the story:
Improbably Apocalyptic *warnings* on global warming are often mistaken for *predictions*.
This leads people to suffer anxiety and grief.
The piece starts by describing people sinking deeper and deeper into depression because they start to believe what they see and read when doom scrolling. It's a bona fide health problem as the linked @nytimes piece by @EllenBarryNYT also proves.

There was a time I really liked Bjorn Lomborg.

But by now his relentless attempt to sabotage anything that helps us to transition away from fossil fuels reminds me of Wormtongue, the sycophant to power in lord of the rings.
The following may seem like a rant but I study electric vehicles (EVs) at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Getting the science right is important to me (see my pinned thread) and Bjorn constant misleading irks me.

Comments saying "they burn longer and are harder to put out" and "older cars burn more often and EVs are generally younger": true!

But let me add: EVs don't explode so lower chance someone gets harmed. On top of lower chance of fire.

So: fire is MUCH less of an issue with EVs.
And new solutions bring water directly to the battery. This enables ending the fire in 15 minutes or so.
I've also seen solutions by Renault that basically provide a tap opening for firemen and make the process simpler still.

EV sales increased over 100% in 2021!
In 2022 a 61% growth to over 10 million vehicles is expected!

I just tweeted about the amazing growth of solar PV but with EVs we see the same pattern.

I always focus on yearly exponential growth. With 61%, 2022 is expected to be a phenomenal year for EVs! But if you look at the entire period (with an average of 59%) it's actually average.

So I'm not surprised at all. Just very happy that it continues to go as can be expected.
By the way: as you can clearly see in the previous table, China is leading the world. Not only in production but also in adoption. So maybe it's only to be expected that they have most of the resource refineries and battery production. (The same is true for solar PV.)

Solar PV is picking up steam again!

2018 and 2019 where timid with just 9% growth per year. But 2020, 2021 and 2022* (*expected) pick up the pace again with 22%, 27% and 25%. That is close to the average over 1977-2022 of 32% yearly growth.

I would like to add that @solar_chase is openly calling her team "cowards" (tongue in cheek) for being conservative. She's claiming 2021 will probably still go up (maybe even to 200 GW).

I think their prognosis for 2022-2030 is probably also conservative again.
Maybe I can remind people that I've been saying and illustrating this since 2007 by pointing out the difference between reality and the "not predictions" of the IEA. But everybody falls victim to this conservatism in order to be taken seriously.

How I see #DontLookUp: an unintended self-parody of the makers on their own superficiality and uncritical acceptance of US exceptionalism.

I understand the moviemakers probably meant to satirise others but I feel they mostly parodied themselves.

The system that captured them and the training they received seems to make it almost impossible for them to engage with hard science in a meaningful way.
And I think Trump is a mad and dangerous enemy of truth but the caricature of him and his followers will only convince them you are smug & stupid. It's an easy way to get cheap laughs but will only polarize the issue further: #nothelping.
