I have no authority and no paycheck for this but #UsMovie touched a lot of deeply personal reference points and I don’t want these weird feelings inside me.
******Spoilers follow
There were so many perspectives on realness: reflection, shadow, mimesis—even creatures/things get twins (spider, rabbit, ambulance). By the time we see how the Tethered (They) live, we have many signals to think about who lives vs who performs a life
Yes for the glory in watching Adelaide as a little black girl pursuing an adventure (tho ill-advised). She GETS INTO trouble, doesn’t EMBODY it: one way that black horror is liberating. But I didn’t need to remember Alice in Wonderland and that creepy ass rabbit! Image
The Wilson kids’ sleepy complacency in beginning (compared to their all-night wakefulness by the end). They have a middle-class freedom and yet the little boy Jason, who struggles to “focus,” cannot remove his mask when the “white day is done” ImageImage
The distraught, disheveled appearance of the black Tethered; the Wilson family recoiling. It reminded me of Mike Tyson calling Don King “the true n*gger,” and what we fear becoming or revealing
Red was a Kara Walker silhouette come to life: her jerky motions, her swiftness, her glee and her silence, her cries. And the empathy pangs that Lupita faced off with a stunt double, simulated violence on her likeness 😢 ImageImageImage
The black Tethered appear and make declarations, taking their time and space, yearning to cut the bond between them. The white Tethered slaughter and chill, do cartwheels. They seem to want what’s on the surface. A quiet convo about who can afford leisure, who leisure is for
I appreciated the race/inter-class tensions btwn the Wilsons and Tylers. There was a clumsy but chilling moment when Dahlia (white Tethered mom) puts on Kitty’s lip gloss and self-mutilates, mirroring Kitty’s cosmetic procedure. I wondered how Peele understands beauty performance
#UsMovie depicts the west’s terror of the savage and the jungle inside, described best by Toni Morrison in Beloved. Her brother Baldwin also reminded us America NEEDED a n*gger and so invented one Image
The metaphor of dance, of Adelaide/Red’s more intimately connected bodies was perfect: a swift shadow is harder to outrun. Reminded me of Pina Bausch’s tether in “…como el musguito en la piedra, ay si, si, si” Image
s/o to the Fates btw ✂️ snipsnip Image
Later, Jason cannot take his mother’s blood-soaked hand. The victory is muted by the slaughter and by what he knows. Can we ever face America’s bloody trails, unmarked graves, forgotten tunnels, and endless overwriting of indigenous peoples?
I’m uneasy with the western sensibility that there must always be a They and that the They gains freedom through violence; must assert Their symbolism via violence. // The surface dad, Gabe Wilson, calls the Tethered’s actions “performance art,” which— Image
As an immigrant, allusions to borders, cages, and institutionalized existence were so emotional. Do Lupita’s characters embody the message that a Them can never become an Us? And...can the immigrant ever be a “real” American? 👀
Ooh and wee that the protagonist demonstrates how the Us can be radicalized by oppression. The Us is violent in expectation, in a sense of deserving. Injustice is an affront to them even though the beauty of their lives arrives via (& in spite of) destroying others
Lol the whole cast of #Us when @JordanPeele had them drop it, pick it up fast, and scamper for weeks: Image

1) This thread is as long as a CVS receipt. It details the harms and legal threats I’ve faced since Feb in Joe Penney’s attempt to steal or control my film work. It’s giving Cadillac Records but with no budget. Thru his unprompted apologies, you can see why I’ve been so stressed:
2) I found out the film #sunofthesoil was on Netflix through IG. I worked on it for $0 from 2017-2020 as a writer, co-director, and producer. I own 50% of this film. But I now need a lawyer to advocate for me as an investor and to eventually be paid. Joe also controls the socials
3) I believe #joepenney is also trying to steal over $33K of co-owned film equipment. It’s been in his possession since its purchase in Oct 2021, and he’s refused to sign a standard agreement to share it.

In March, Zoe Rana Mungin (30) wasn’t admitted to a clinical trial for Remdesivir. Her sister Mia turned to Twitter for help. Zoe, a writer and teacher, had been denied a COVID test twice. The *3rd* time Zoe went to Brookdale Hospital, she was put on a ventilator a day later.
After a month-long fight for her life, Zoe Mungin died on April 27, 2020 at 12:25pm in the same hospital where another sister died of an asthma attack at the age of 20.
Zoe’s sister Mia was denied a COVID test *four times* despite being a nurse in NYC during the height of this pandemic! Mia was “assumed” sick from exposure. Rana’s symptoms were dismissed as a “panic attack.”

This was so beautiful: École des Sables performing The Rite of Spring in collaboration with Pina Bausch Foundation. Location: Toubab Dialaw, Senegal. Director: Florian Heinzen-Ziob DP: Enno Endlicher ImageImageImageImage
The expressions, the commitment to moments, the air of conviction, the people on the beach pausing to watch... this was truly dance as a summoning. I wish I could hear their hair and footfalls, the wind that evening. ImageImageImageImage
Thinking of this dancer, of submission, desire, falling, the difference between listlessness and stillness. ImageImageImageImage

Today would've been Emmett Till's 79th birthday. Mamie Till Mobley said he was "the happiest baby in the world… you could put him in his bed, and he would lie there and kick and coo for hours." (Beauchamp's 2005 documentary) Image
"We had fun together, we laughed together... he was very good in art and he was very good in science. He seemed to unravel that science like nobody’s business. He was very good in spelling, too.” ImageImage
Weeks after his 14th birthday, he left Chicago to spend the summer in Mississippi. Before he got on the train, he said to his mother: "Take this watch, I won’t need it where I’m going." I love to think of Emmett as a teen, intending to live in suspended time with his cousins. Image

This thread doesn’t challenge whiteness. It is whiteness. Giuliani’s tweet is a racist, targeted attack—part of a sustained violence against a US Congresswoman. Whiteness is quietly doing the work to help others understand the logic of that attack (well, they do look alike).
Whiteness is misnaming violence and making it a feature of race instead of practice. Violence does not have to be fixed or tribal. Whiteness is acting like an ally here while softly echoing the initial violence. Whiteness is refusing to see, hear, or actually resist.
Any refusal to see Omar’s likeness to white politicians holding guns is very similar to why Anderson thinks these Somali women bear a “striking resemblance.” Lack of care in looking. Lack of practice in careful looking. And lack of insight. All are violences.

Thread to rebuke stress: my favorite perfumes!

Age 14, first and most repurchased scent is Noa: peony, coriander, musk, white flowers, pepper. It’s a really dreamy, flexible, clean, inky, elegant scent that works for me year-round Image
Next I tried Amor Amor, a super bright, tart, sugary perfume. Young auntie vibes. Grapefruit, jasmine, amber, cedar. Its loudness could almost make you squint but in a mostly good way Image
Detour to sprays and oils because perfume was still for special occasions. I wore natural jasmine, lilac, Egyptian and white musk oils. Also used harsh sprays by Body Fantasies and Amber Romance by VS. Those too-sweet scents remind me of mono and mutual peer rejection ImageImageImageImage
