do the maths:

- NI rise & freezing income tax thresholds will cost typical household £600

- energy bills about to go up by £693

relief from Sunak:

- £200 (loan) for everyone

- extra £150 tax rebate for poorer households

ie most people still about £1,000 a year worse off
and as others are now pointing out:

- freeze in student loan thresholds
- universal credit uplift cancelled
- variable mortgages to jump
plus Bank of England has today issued forecast that inflation will hit 7.25 % by April

Breaking:

energy prices will rise by £693 a year for millions of households after regulator Ofgem hiked the price cap on bills to £1,971 or 54%
- the hike in energy prices is slightly worse for millions of (mostly vulnerable) people on pre-payment deals

- they will see an increase of £708 from £1,309 to £2,017
Sunak announces £9bn rescue package:

- £200 cut in energy bills for every household to be repaid over five years

- £150 council tax rebate for less expensive homes in bands A-D

- new discretionary £150m fund for councils

- Warm Homes Discount expanded to 3m households

Bury South MP Christian Wakeford has defected from the Conservatives to Labour, telling Boris Johnson “you and the Conservative Party as a whole have shown themselves incapable of offering the leadership and government this country deserves”
by my calculations this is the first Tory MP to jump ship to Labour since Quentin Davies in 2007

before that Shaun Woodward shifted from Labour-Tory in 1999

John Bercow joined Labour in 2021 but was no longer an MP
not a co-incidence that the announcement at 11.45 (which @SebastianEPayne scooped just beforehand) is just before prime minister's questions
