years
your regular reminder that the corporation tax (CT) rate will go up from 19 to 25% with effect from 1 April 2023
and that employees, employers and the self-employed will all pay 1.25p more in the pound for National Insurance (NI) from April 2022

- the official report into Boris Johnson’s plan for a bridge or tunnel between Northern Ireland and Scotland has just been published

- tunnel would cost up to £208bn

- bridge would be up to £335bn Image
"planning, design, parliamentary and legal processes,
and construction would take nearly 30 years before the crossing could become operational, even given a smooth passage of funding and authority to proceed"
respect to Peter Hendy for at least pretending to take the whole thing seriously, with actual charts and visual designs etc ImageImageImage

-Johnson took the moral high ground with Tory MPs yesterday, saying:

“you must put your job as an MP 1st and you must devote yourself primarily and above all to your constituents”

-we calculate the PM himself has made over £4.3m from outside interests

ft.com/content/a256fc…
- Johnson also juggled job of being MP with editing Spectator mag from 2001 to 2005

- the @FT calculation of £4.3m doesn’t even include his first stint in Westminster from 2001-2008 because the register didn’t demand disclosure of precise payments then

by me with @kadhim
it’s on the @FT front page tonight Image

- this government likes changing the rules to its own benefit

- thus changing recruitment process for Ofcom chair after Paul Dacre rejection

- now it has hired a lobbyist to advise the selection process

- his firm advises Sky, Facebook and Apple

ft.com/content/36d958…
Dr Damian Tambini, a fellow at the London School of Economics, said the dispute about appointments was endangering Ofcom’s “gold standard” reputation.

Tambini said that if Prescott had significant links to companies regulated by Ofcom, “this should disqualify him”.
here’s a reminder of how the Ofcom selection process has been changed to help Dacre, via @jimwaterson last week

meanwhile at @COP26 we are seeing a major unravelling of some of the biggest multi-country agreements:

1) Indonesia says the deforestation agreement it signed two days ago was “inappropriate and unfair”

ft.com/content/f01342…
2) today’s big announcement is loads of countries have signed agreement to phase out coal power stations #cop26

- but original targets have been watered down from 2030 (developed countries) and 2040 (developing)

- instead it’s now 2030s/2040s “or as soon as possible thereafter”
I’ve been helpfully leaked the document signed by the various countries, you can see the much looser wording here
