The field for this hire was thin from the get go. Shoureshi was never the right choice. Wim gave plenty of notice before leaving, so trustees could have called a failed search and started over.

No PhD needed to know that a stitch in time saves nine. 1/x
Haven't talked much about my exit from PSU but caveat: I'm bitter. PSU trustees waste hundreds of thousands in taxpayer dollars on greasy private consultants like Margolis Healy and shitty hires like Shoureshi while students face an 11% tuition hike and programs are cut 🤬 2/x
Meanwhile, one of our greatest regional economic development assets stagnates, a tanker anchored asea for lack of a captain. The effects reverberated throughout our institution as we floundered w/o direction, hemorrhaging talent. 3/x
The equity implications are great. PSU is a pathway to opportunity for so many Portlanders. The current lack of quality leadership (trustees and executives both) means the students and faculty suffer even as administrative budgets bloat. 4/x
And of course, the failure to #DisarmPSU means we know for certain that that Black Lives DON'T matter at Portland State... at all.

Cc @PortlandStateSU 5/x
Portland is a wonderfully creative city at the center of an innovation ecosystem. With the right vision and leadership (community-driven), PSU could grow even as we grow.

(Stanford wasn't always Stanford; every university starts somewhere.)

This latest chapter a tragic one. 6/x
On a personal level, seeing PSU struggle makes me so sad. PSU crafted me into the leader I am today. I'm indebted to my peers, faculty, mentors. Programs like University Studies as an undergrad, my graduate program in the Toulan School, and @FirstStopPDX all world class 🙏🏼 7/7

Last week, prior to police killing Daunte Wright, I gave an interview on behalf of @thestreettrust to @KOINNews about the defunding of Portland's traffic enforcement division.

When they asked why I didn't think more policing was the answer to traffic violence, I said this:
Racial bias in traffic enforcement is a well-documented reality. One life lost to police violence at a traffic stop is too many. Kendra James needlessly lost her life during a traffic stop. Sandra Bland. Philando Castille. Walter Scott. Jordan Edwards. #SayHerName #SayHisName
At this critical time of reckoning with Portland's legacy of white supremacy and racist policing, we must come together to innovate new ways of ensuring everyone in our community has access to safe and just streets, regardless of their skin color, housing status, or zip code.

Lots of talk about portraits of communists on a skirt I wore to a spectacle in 2016, but nobody wants to take on the Ninja, Space Force or James Dean images on there, too?

Cowards.

For the record, art as social commentary is not the same as endorsement. bbc.co.uk/programmes/art…
Spectacle as social commentary is something for which Portland is well known. From Naked Bike Ride to Pop Mob, the Raging Grannies to Banana Bloc, it's one of my favorite forms of protest.

The Reverend Billy Talen is a master of the form. businessinsider.com/profile-of-wil…
I could not love you more, Portland. Of course this was locally made! More, as the genealogy of Sarah's "Couture Controversy" Skirt unravels (for the archives).

Heartening to see y'all questioning the merits of a write-in campaign yesterday but it's not particularly relevant electorally. Wheeler's incumbency is the real threat to the future of Portland this November.

You can help me unseat Wheeler 3 ways this week. 📝 ⬇️
1️⃣ DONATE

The 6-to-1 pubLic match resets for the general. Buying advertising, sending mail, paying campaign staff, phones & internet, distributing (and redistributing lol) lawn signs all cost a lot of money.

(Wheeler campaigns from the mayor's office.)

2️⃣ PHONE & TEXT BANK

We're strategically talking to tens of thousands of voters each month and hearing their concerns. Your testimonial about why you believe Wheeler has failed and why I will be a good mayor to replace him really makes a difference.

@LauralPorter Pulling this quote out of context misrepresents what I was trying to say her. I guess I got a little flustered with being repeatedly interrupted while trying to give a thoughtful response. So I want to correct the record, because I'm getting repeated death threats over this. 1/
@LauralPorter Peaceful protests are advancing the movement, and as noted in the article, I of course oppose crime and arson. 2/
@LauralPorter I disagree with the Mayor's characterization of peaceful protesters as attempted murderers. It's fodder for Fox News and the Trump administration to use our beautiful city as a campaign prop and I won't be party to it. 3/

Portland police have escalated to attacking cyclists on main thoroughfares in daylight. I have a hard time imagining any context in which this is acceptable use of force.

(FYI this is a primary route SB off the Hawthorne, a busy bike bridge)
Hey transportation community, want to step into the fray on this one? Random right of way closures day after day? Attacking cyclists? None of this is OK.

No, seriously, there's research supporting it. muse.jhu.edu/book/11742
(progressive portlanders flummoxed by #orpol contradictions should read Clucas & Steele as well as Kopp's "Eden within Eden: Oregon's Utopian Heritage"

Explains.
So.
Much.)
