There are two general camps of thought in Black culture about solidarity with white people.

Those who believe that it can be productive

Those who believe that it can never be productive

The Second group's position is often supported by the response of white people to the First
Are there Black people who look at the history of whiteness in America and find nothing to feel for white people but righteous indignation and scorn?

Yes

Are there those who seek the humanity trapped under whiteness?

Yes

But let me explain. Mostly we just don't trust y'all
The whole point of whiteness was to tie assorted Europeans together in a shared identity.

The unifying thread was a principle of anti-Blackness

As with any fraternity, cult or gang, the benefits come with a demand for undying loyalty.
To ask a white person to show solidarity with Black people is to literally ask that they turn against whiteness -- the source from which their power, privilege, normalization, and very identity flows.
To show solidarity with Black people is to literally turn against whiteness.

There is no way to show solidarity with Black people while still performing whiteness.

They are mutually exclusive.
We get that this is hard.

We get that you might really really want to do it.

We get that you may have put in all sorts of effort.

It's just that we don't trust that when it comes down to the line, you won't choose whiteness.
Put it this way.

If there's a national disaster and everyone has to evacuate, let's say. We EXPECT that white people would find some way to prioritize the escape of white people
We expect that white friends and allies will suddenly be all

"Well it's pragmatic, you see. We WOULD like to get everybody, but we have to take care of ourselves first, if you were in our position (which you're not) we're sure you'd do the same. Ok. Real sorry. Bye!"
This seems cynical until you realize that this has happened over and over again.

It happens every time a Black child is killed by police and white people don't riot.

It happens every time a white politician tells Black people to wait for their turn
It happens each time a white person unfriends a Black person for mentioning their racism.

It happens each time a white person threatens to withdraw their "allyship"

It happens each time a white person demands the stage when Black people are speaking
Every Black person who has close relationships with white people shares the experience of at some point having to think or say "Oh come ON. Not you TOO!"

White people are Lucy asking Black people to try and kick the football just one more time.

This time. Y'all promise
So by and large, as nice as y'all are. As well meaning as y'all may be. As honest and forthright as y'all may be in everyday life.

We don't TRUST y'all.
If you're a white person and a Black person loves you, cares for you, supports you, believes in you....

Remember that this is DESPITE the fact that fundamentally, we can't trust you.

Don't take it personally. Just prove us wrong. And don't expect credit if you do.
Time and time again white people remind us that while your causes should be ours, our causes are not yours.

Solidarity with Black people is optional for white people because if you withdraw your solidarity, nothing changes for you.
In fact, the legacy of whiteness on society makes it such that withdrawing support from Black people is a benefit.

It allows retreat into your comfort zone. It allows you to enjoy your privilege without concern. It eases relationships with other white people.
Everything about whiteness makes throwing Blackness under the bus the easiest and most immediately beneficial option.

Financially
Emotionally
Socially
Whiteness as a construct pits rational self-interest against human decency.

It leverages loss avoidance to keep people tethered.

It constantly reminds white people the cost of turning against whiteness

To trust you, Black people would have to have faith in you rejecting it all
White people have no discernible track record of doing this in any organized or significant fashion.

It has never been prioritized. And why would it? What system explicitly prioritizes its own destruction?
You will sell us out for your jobs
for your partners
for your kids
for an election
for a stock price
for maintenance of self-image
for convenience
for comfort
for resources
for preferential treatment
for default status

Hell. You'll sell us out for retweets.

Why trust you?
Now you understand why Black people raise an eyebrow at your peace-seeking calls for kumbaya.

(50 points to any white person who knows what kumbaya means besides a corny, naive call for peace?)

If you don't know. Think about that for a second.
Now, knowing all this.

Look at your pleas for acceptance through our eyes.

Look at your demands to have your opinions heard

Look at your admonishments for not joining your white cause, candidate, crusade.
Ask yourself what presumption of good faith white people have earned.

How much of your comfort, safety, quality of life, standard of living are you willing to sacrifice in the name of solidarity with Black people?

Don't answer. Think about it.

Ok. Now ask again.
The answer in your heart is the answer we see on your faces.
For those of you curious about the Kumbaya question, the answers are in the thread below.

Addendum:

If you watched how the distribution of vaccines played out, you'll see that my cynical hypothetical disaster scenario played out almost to the letter.

Both on an individual community level and on a global scale.

It has been 72 hours of the most ridiculous @ATT customer service experience ever.

It's ongoing as I write.

So. My sim card has been acting up. Just doesn't show up for work from time to time...
So I call into Customer Service and they explain that sim cards deteriorate over time and they could either send me a new one or I could just grab one at an AT&T store.

I pick store.

It's faster and I'm passing one anyway. Right?

No.
I get to the store and am greeted by a smiling tech.

I ask how long a swap should take. He says five minutes. That's cool cause I have fifteen to spare before getting back to work.

But. It's his first day.

5 minutes turns into 10
Into 15
Into 30

Consent and Hair: A Quick Guide for Dudes

A lot of you are still confused about this whole consent thing and how you should navigate it. So I wanna just bring it down to something y'all are all familiar with.

Navigate your consent like a good barber.
Most of y'all get haircuts from time to time.

Some of y'all go regularly
Some of y'all go occasionally
Some of y'all have a favorite barber
Some of y'all go to whoever.

None of y'all want people coming up to you on the street trying to just cut your hair.
But for those of y'all who have been to a new barber, what happens?

You meet them. They don't just start cutting your hair the minute you sit down in the chair.

They talk to you about what kind of haircut you WANT.

They ask specific questions.

Consent

What's the big deal about Humanities and Civics?

Well they're the disciplines that teach us how we relate to each other and the world around us.

They are not the opposites of STEM fields. They are the critical context necessary to use those STEM fields properly
One of the reason that conspiracy theories, magical thinking, short-sighted policy and knee-jerk policy positions are increasingly easy to make is that we have a declining understanding of how systems interact.

This isn't ALL bad education. Everything is increasingly integrated
While STEM fields push us forward in engineering and empirical measurement and manipulation of the world, humanities teach us how to grapple with the ramifications of our technological and scientific advancements.

We need BOTH the tools and the aggregated wisdom to use them well

Why is Capitalism bad?

It has occurred to me that people frequently don't mean the same thing when they talk about Capitalism which makes it difficult for people to understand each other and how their opinions actually relate to each other.

Let me try and help a little.
Firstly. Capitalism is not the same as commerce.

Being against Capitalism is NOT being against people starting businesses or innovating or buying and selling goods or being paid fairly for their work.

People often get stuck here.
If we don't mean commerce when we discuss Capitalism, then what ARE people referring to?

Well it could be at least one of three things:

1) An economic system
2) A guiding governmental principle
3) An ideology

The arguments for and against depend on which you're talking about.

As much as we all love to hate it, News Media works exactly the same way that our brains do....

It takes in a functionally infinite amount of information, ignores 99.99% of it, and then after running the remaining .01% through bias, creates a narrative that makes it make sense.
We tend to think of the News as "what happened" but we also know that's not really what it is

There's:
What happened
What people witnessed
What there's evidence of
What people told News
What the News thought was important

-How the News framed that-

THAT'S what News actually is
At each level, the amount of data loss is immense.

Most of...
...what happens, nobody accurately witnesses.
...what people witness, there's no evidence of
...the evidence is never told to the News
...what is told, the News deems unimportant
...what is important, is biased

How To Lose Your Principles and Become A Corrupt Politician: A Handbook.

So you want to make positive change for your community and provide a counterbalance to the self-serving corruption you see in your legislative bodies?

Cute.

Let's talk.
Chapter 1: Campaigning - I bet you didn't realize your moral code would get challenged so early huh?

Here's the thing. Your community is struggling. That's why you're running. They have no money. So funding yourself through their donations alone is a no go.
You are going to need campaign cash. You're probably gonna have to take some money from some organizations and corporations.

Now I know you don't want to do that, but listen. You can choose groups whose values align with yours! No worries!
