Over the next few days, MCSO will be sharing some Seat Belt Myths vs Realities from the folks @NHTSAgov #ClickItOrTicket
Seat Belt Myth vs Reality 1
Myth: Seat belts can trap you in a fire or under water.
Reality: While this can be true, incidents involving fire or water account for 0.5% of crashes & wearing a seat belt gives you a much greater chance of being conscious & able-bodied to escape.
Seat Belt Myth vs Reality 2
Myth: I don’t need to wear a seat belt because I have air bags.
Reality: The safest way to ride is buckled up in a vehicle equipped with air bags. Even without an air bag, you are safer buckled up than you are with an air bag and not buckled up.
Seat Belt Myth vs Reality 3
Myth: If you're not going far or not traveling fast, seat belts are unnecessary.
Reality: Seemingly routine trips can be deceptively dangerous. Most fatal crashes happen within 25 miles from home and at speeds of less than 40 mph.
Seat Belt Myth vs Reality 4
Myth: Your seat belt can hurt you in a crash.
Reality: In a crash, everything in your car can cause bodily harm, but your seat belt is one of the few things that can actually save you.
Seat Belt Myth vs Reality 5
Myth: You’re safer in a pickup truck, so wearing a seat belt is unnecessary.
Reality: For occupants in SUVs, pickups, and vans, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to the driver and front seat passenger by 60%.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is aware of an event tonight calling for a gathering outside Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center in Northeast Portland. We ask that this event remains peaceful.
The Donald E. Long Center is much more than a corrections facility, it houses youth, provides care, custody and outreach services, and is where juvenile courts are located in Multnomah County.
MCSO is responsible for the safety and security of the youth living inside, Department of Community Justice employees who provide rehabilitative services and the safety and well-being of the surrounding community.
