In the decade leading up to Sati's abolition (1815 - 29), 5 in 6 Sati cases in India were recorded in Bengal

Why this concentration in Bengal?

Perhaps Dāyabhāga inheritance law (strong in Bengal) played a role, wherein the widow inherited husband's property rights
The relative liberal position w.r.t. widow's property rights in Dayabhaga is also mentioned in Anant Sadashiv Altekar's fine historical survey of women in Indian society.

Here he is -
He also adds that Dayabhaga perhaps was not an unmixed blessing to the women of Bengal, and maybe it contributed to the abuse of Sati pratha
Ofcourse nobody can be sure what was the degree of impact of Dayabhaga law on the incidence of Sati in Bengal

But just putting it out there as a factor that played a role as per many commentators
