.@realDonaldTrump opens his #SocialMediaSummit remarks by bragging about the Dow. "I view it as jobs and 401(k)s," he says.
@realDonaldTrump "A lot of people are happy...really everybody is happy, some people just aren't willing to admit it."
Trump calls his guests "journalists" who are "challenging the media gatekeepers."
"You communicate directly with our citizens without having to go through the fake news filter," he says.
.@realDonaldTrump now bragging about how @HillaryClinton had a large professional social media team while he only had @Scavino45. He's now talking about how his campaign uses material from the assembled trolls and meme makers.
@realDonaldTrump @HillaryClinton @Scavino45 "Some of you are extraordinary, the crap you think of is unbelievable."
He's now attacking the courts for ruling against him on the census.
"The only thing we can't ask is 'are you a citizen of the United States?' Isn't it a crazy thing?"
He's now introducing members of Congress in attendance, including @MarshaBlackburn, who has repeatedly lied about being "censored" by Twitter (a campaign ad she wanted to place violated their terms of service).
@MarshaBlackburn Also in attendance are @GOPLeader, @RepLizCheney & @RepMattGaetz, who've also lied about social media "censorship." Gaetz actually used Twitter to threaten Michael Cohen and is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for it.
Now he's introducing @HawleyMO, who says "the fake media" lies by saying there's no censorship.

"If they want to keep their special deal...they need to quit discriminating against conservatives," he says.
"I dont think it's too much to ask for these hugh tech platforms...they shouldn't discriminate, they shouldn't censor, they shouldn't shut us down."
.@realDonaldTrump calls Hawley's 230 reform bill "very important legislation," and begins lying about Twitter preventing folks from following him.

He's saying the fact that he's not getting new followers as fast is evidence that Twitter is actively keeping people from following.
He's also saying that the lower engagement his tweets get is evidence of deliberate actions by Twitter, as if he is entitled to engagement and there's no way people would get sick of his tweeting after years of it.
"It used to be like a rocket ship when I put out a beauty," he says.
"I turned out to be right" about "spying," he says (FACT CHECK: WRONG).
"I've never seen it before when it's subtracted," he says, implying Twitter is deliberately lowering his follower count. FACT: Twitter removes bots and fake/inauthentic accounts.

Now he's accusing Democrats of having fake followers.

"They're playing games," he says.
Now @realDonaldTrump is defending @realJamesWoods, who Twitter made delete tweets because they violated their terms of service.

He's also bragging about how he declared that the US would recognize Israel's control over the Golan Heights with a tweet.
@realDonaldTrump @RealJamesWoods "I call Twitter a typewriter, that's what I call it," he says.

He's also accusing @CNN of not reporting on his tweets (FACT CHECK: Not True)
@realDonaldTrump @RealJamesWoods @CNN "I'm actually a good speller," he says. (FACT CHECK: "covfefe").
@realDonaldTrump @RealJamesWoods @CNN He's now calling @MSNBC "stone cold crazy."

"They don't like me too much," he says before bragging about "The Apprentice" and how @Schwarzenegger's version did poorly.
@realDonaldTrump @RealJamesWoods @CNN @MSNBC @Schwarzenegger "With amazing creativity and determination you're bypassing the corrupt establishment and the corrupt media," he says before lying about how TV networks turn off cameras during his speeches.
"Thank you for what you're doing on behalf ot eh nation," he says, telling attendees they are "getting the truth out." (FACT CHECK: these people routinely spread lies and disinformation).
He's accusing media of not covering his "kidney has a special place in the heart" and other stories because he's a conservative. (FACT CHECK: False).
"I used to get the greatest press...until I got elected," he says. (FACT CHECK: He often pretended to be his own publicist and lied to reporters personally)

"We're getting the word out, and we're getting it out in a different way," he says.
After recognizing @DiamondandSilk he says "when historians look back" they will consider today's summit very important.

Adds that he's going to call a meeting with major social media platforms.
"Remember, we won, we have a bigger voice than everybody but we don't get covered fairly," he says.

"I want fair press," he adds. (FACT CHECK: when he says "fair" he means sycophantic).
He's now repeating his usual lie about how the military was "not a good situation" when he became President.
"Our country is really powerful and really strong, never been like this."
"We have terrible bias...we have censorship like nobody would believe," he says, before recognizing selectively edited video distributor @JamesOKeefeIII (whose organization tried conning the @washingtonpost into publishing a made up accusation against Roy Moore)
"They're playing with a lot of minds and they're playing unfairly."

"They should really be liking our side," he adds.

Says he hopes there will never be candidates like 2020 Democrats again because they want "communism."
He's now bragging about crowd size. "We have enthusiasm that's far greater than the left."

He's invoking his July 4th event as evidence of the level of support for him despite the fact that the White House insisted it was a nonpartisan event.
"The election coming up...is the most important election of our times...it is going to go one way or it is going to go in the direction of Venezuela," he says.
"They want open borders, they want people to pour in, including criminals," he says. (FACT CHECK: This is a LIE).
"The basic blocking of what they want to get out...the fact that they don't let them join...theres no doubt in my mind that I should have millions and millions...I know that they've been blocked."
"They make it absolutely impossible and we're not going to let it happen," he says (FACT CHECK: LIE).
"I want everyone to do well, but they've gotta treat us fairly," he says (now speaking about trade).
He's now saying the WTO "allowed" money to be "taken out of our country and used to rebuild China" (FACT CHECK: False, because the WTO doesn't work that way).
Now he's complaining about Jerome Powell, "we have someone who likes raising rates."
Now @pnjaban is talking about "the corrupt establishment" saying censorship is "all in our heads," "gaslighting us."

She's talking about Twitter users who've been suspended/banned for violating terms of service.
"I'm very concerned that they affected the outcome of the 2018 election," she says.

"What Harmeet said is so true," @realDonaldTrump says, now talking about "collusion" between "the Democrats and the media and these platforms."

I think he's talking about @MrAndyNgo now.
@realDonaldTrump @MrAndyNgo "They [antifa] are never there when the unions are honoring the President," he says (FACT CHECK: Most unions did not endorse him).
@realDonaldTrump @MrAndyNgo Now @LiveAction founder accusing Twitter of banning her group from advertising (They won't allow ads that violate terms of service).

Also says Pintrest banned them for spreading disinformation (FACT CHECK: true).
@realDonaldTrump @MrAndyNgo @LiveAction "I believe in freedom of speech," says @realDonaldTrump, who calls the press "the enemy of the people."
@realDonaldTrump @MrAndyNgo @LiveAction "I don't think the mainstream media is free speech because it's so crooked," he says. "That's very dangerous speech."
@realDonaldTrump @MrAndyNgo @LiveAction "I'm not going to allow...it to happen like this. We're not going to be silenced," he says.

Says White House is responsible for getting people unbanned from platforms.
"Some of you guys are out there," he says.

"Based on feedback we're hearing from you," @realDonaldTrump says he's inviting platform representatives and Democrats to a meeting at the White House.
"Today I'm directing my administration to explore all...regulatory...solutions to protect free speech," @realDonaldTrump says.

"We hope to see transparency, more accountability, and more freedom."

"Big tech must not censor the voices of the American people."
@realDonaldTrump No questions for legit press, but Sebastian Gorka asks what message he would have attendees send to their followers "about what is being done to them and the importance of this issue for 2020."

White House cuts the livestream before @realDonaldTrump answers.

Trump’s political future – and even his freedom – may be threatened by documents found at Mar-a-Lago, experts say ift.tt/mGDEYpv
Former president Donald Trump would have known a letter from Kim Jong Un that he kept after leaving the White House was classified because he once threatened a @Time photographer with jail for trying to take a photo of it during an Oval Office interview. independent.co.uk/news/world/ame…
Even if Trump declassified the Kim Jong Un letter, he could still face charges under the Espionage Act because the government could claim it as "National Defence Information". independent.co.uk/news/world/ame…

Am I? No.

But I'm old enough to remember when presidents regularly took questions from the entire press corps in a setting that allowed for follow-ups & in-depth answers, without screeching staffers cutting off the Q&A.

Do I think the behavior of some of my colleagues has...
...made presidents less amenable to a formal press conference setting? Absolutely. There are absolutely folks out there who are more interested in creating "moments" for the camera or who ask inane or inappropriate questions.

Is it annoying? Sure. But we have a free press in...
...this country, and a person who has the wherewithal to get elected President of the United States should be able to handle both because they're pretty minor issues compared with everything else on his plate. Because — like it or not — that's part of the job.

And while it...

(thread) This story on @POTUS' lack of press conferences & interviews is solid, but misses something that may not have crossed @AamerISmad's mind because he works for the @AP.

Because of Covid restrictions the @WhiteHouse and @whca have... 1/

apnews.com/article/corona…
...colluded on, @JoeBiden has for the most part only taken questions from reporters pre-screened &approved by the White House press office.

For example, at his sole formal news conference on 25 March, only these outlets attended & @PressSec had a list of approved reporters 2/ Image
To the best of my knowledge, he has not yet held a single "open press" event in the White House.

Most events are restricted to the in-house "pool" or "pre-credentialed media" chosen by the White House press office 3/ Image

NEW: Former vice president @mike_pence hasn't yet talked to the @January6thCmte, but sources familiar with his inner circle say the ex-Veep may as well be on board with the investigation into what brought rioters calling for his death to the Capitol. independent.co.uk/news/world/ame…
Multiple sources told the @Independent that the extent to which ex-@mike_pence chief of staff Marc Short has cooperated with the committee so far is a sign that Pence could eventually be amenable to cooperating — or even testifying. independent.co.uk/news/world/ame…
Short, who still works closely with Pence, is "paving the way or laying the groundwork by laying out the facts of what happened," said one ex-Pence aide. “He is basically … the de facto voice for Pence in this situation”. independent.co.uk/news/world/ame…

NOW: AG Garland says @TheJusticeDept "remains committed to holding all 1/6 perpetrators at any level, accountable under law, whether they were present that day, or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault. on our democracy".
"We will follow the facts, wherever they lead," Garland says.

"Because January sixth was an unprecedented attack on the seat of our democracy. We understand that there is broad public interest in our investigation...
...We understand that there are questions about how long the investigation will take, and about what exactly we are doing. Our answer is and will continue to be the same answer we would give to with respect to any ongoing investigation...
