At McAllen Border Patrol station. I’ve been told that this is the first stop and that 2,000 people came in yesterday that they have to process.
Joined by @RepGonzalez who represents the district we are in and @RepSarbanes. The things we have witnessed are heartbreaking.
Interpreters have been called in to speak to those being held here. I’ve been told some people have been held for 60 days with no access to showers or toothbrushes. Sleeping on concrete floors. One man said he was covered with bugs.
Now visiting the Catholic Charities Respite Center. Migrants travel here to spend one night and receive food, clothes, and other important goods. Sister Norma greets everyone with compassion and volunteers help migrants help them contact their families.
Everyone leaves the center with water and sandwiches. I’m told they help between 300-1000 migrants a day.
If anyone would like to help Sister Norma, visit catholiccharitiesrgv.org to submit a volunteer request.
Spoke w a woman who fled Honduras after her brother was killed & gang members burned her store down when she could not pay for them to leave her alone. She paid $800 to pass the river, $5000 for passage to US & spent days in detention. Sadly so many others have similar stories.
Now with a woman for Nicaragua who says she was treated well in the immigration process, but knows others who say the process was violent.

On Jan. 15, Michelle Alyssa Go was tragically pushed to her death in front of an incoming train at the Times Square subway station by Martial Simon, a man suffering from schizophrenia.
This horrific event should never have taken place.
It is time we acted to prevent these violent incidents by providing improved mental health treatment and beds to those in crisis. That’s why I am calling on Congress to pass my Michelle Alyssa Go Act now which allows facilities with more than 16 beds to be reimbursed by Medicaid.
For Medicaid to truly function as a social safety net, it needs to address people’s mental well-being not just their physical needs.
When our friends and neighbors have access to these services, it makes our communities safer and healthier places to live.
At our @FSCDems hearing we examined the affordable housing crisis. In NY and across the country, rising interest rates are impacting homeowners, home buyers, and even renters. As mortgage rates have increased by nearly two basis points, the median home price rose by over $50,000.
The monthly cost of home ownership which includes a monthly payment on a 30-year mortgage, property taxes, property insurance, mortgage insurance grew by at least $500 a month, but in some cases in metropolitan areas it's grown by over $1,000 a month.
We must target our efforts to fight inflation so that we do not hurt working people such as addressing the war in Ukraine and fixing our supply chains.
@POTUS just signed into law the historic #InflationReductionAct. I was proud, after a lot of hard work, this legislation included many of the priorities which I have championed for years. 🧵
$3 billion to electrify the Postal Service delivery fleet.
$975 million to support the deployment of emerging and sustainable technologies to help reduce emissions and cut costs for taxpayers.
$25 million to track the labor, equity, and environmental standards and performance of the Inflation Reduction Act.
$25 million to support implementation and track the equitable distribution of the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the funds.
Right now, I am holding an @OversightDems hearing with the CEOs of two major gun manufactures. This hearing comes after a major investigation by the committee into the practices of gun manufacturers.
Today we released a report with some of our findings 👇
Our report shows that the gun industry has continued to make massive profits selling weapons of war to our communities. Companies like Daniel Defense and Ruger have amassed huge revenues selling AR-15 Style firearms, the weapon of choice for mass shooters.
Also disturbing are the selling practices used to push these weapons.
Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the rifle purchased and used by the Uvalde shooter, offers its firearms for sale through a buy-now, pay-later, financing advertised on the front page of its website.
No one should worry that their period tracking or other health app data might be used to locate them at clinics or create digital breadcrumbs of interest in an abortion.
I’m investigating, starting with asking major apps and data brokers to provide info to @OversightDems.
A recent study found that 87% of the 23 most popular women’s health apps—including reproductive health apps—shared user data with third parties, yet just over 50% requested consent from their users.
And recent reporting indicates that data brokers have sold mobile phone location data from individuals who have visited health care clinics that provide abortions, leading to concerns about the misuse of private data to target individuals seeking this care.
The AR-15 style rifles used in Highland Park, Parkland, Aurora, and San Bernardino were made by @Smith_WessonInc.
I’m demanding their CEO attend our July 20 @OversightDems hearing.
The AR-15 style rifle used by the gunman in Uvalde was made by @DanielDefense. The Las Vegas shooter was also found with four AR-15-style rifles from DD, including one outfitted with a bump stock and a 100-round magazine.
The AR-15 style rifles used in the grocery store shooting in Boulder, CO last year and in the church shooting in Sutherland Springs, TX in 2017 were made by Ruger.
