1. Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his election as leader of the Conservative Party. Despite our many differences, I will do all I can to develop a way of working with him that respects and protects Scotland’s views and interests.
2. However, it would be hypocritical not to be frank about the profound concerns I have at the prospect of his premiership. I am certain that the vast majority of people of Scotland would not have chosen to hand the keys of No 10 to someone with his views and track record.
3. Most immediately I, @scotgov and @theSNP will work with others to do everything we can to block his plan for a no deal Brexit - which would do catastrophic harm to Scotland.
4. And I will continue to advance the preparations to give Scotland the right to choose our own future through independence, rather than having a future that we don’t want imposed on us by Boris Johnson and the Tories. That is now more important than ever.

1/ Congratulations to @RishiSunak - I wish him well and, notwithstanding our political differences, will do my best to build a constructive working relationship with him in the interests of those we serve.
2/ That he becomes the first British Asian to become PM is a genuinely significant moment. It certainly makes this a special #Diwali
3/ As for the politics, I’d suggest one immediate decision he should take and one he certainly should not.
He should call an early General Election. And he should not - must not - unleash another round of austerity. Our public services will not withstand that.

1. There will be a widespread sense of relief that the chaos of the last few days (indeed months) will come to an end, though notion of Boris Johnson staying on as PM until autumn seems far from ideal, and surely not sustainable?
2. Boris Johnson was always manifestly unfit to be PM and the Tories should never have elected him leader or sustained him in office for as long as they have. But the problems run much deeper than one individual. The Westminster system is broken.
3. For 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 the democratic deficit inherent in Westminster government doesn’t get fixed with a change of PM. None of the alternative Tory PMs would ever be elected in Scotland. And in policy terms, it is hard to see what real difference hard Brexit supporting Labour offers.

1/ The @scotgov ‘super-sponsor’ scheme for 🇺🇦 is now open. If you are seeking refuge from the war, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 wants to welcome you - by selecting “Scottish Government” on the UK visa application site at gov.uk/guidance/apply… we hope to offer you a quick & easy route here.
2/ The screenshot below shows the page on which you should select ‘The Scottish Government’. Choosing this option means that you do not have to arrange an individual sponsor before coming to Scotland. We will help you do that once you are here Image
3/ When you first arrive in Scotland, we will provide temporary accommodation for you/your family while we put in place all the longer term support you need, including a place to stay. We want Scotland to be a safe, secure home for as long as you need.

1/ If UK gov is not willing (wrongly in my view) to waive visa requirements for Ukrainians seeking refuge as other countries have done, it is vital that its community sponsorship scheme is easy to use, fast, humane and safe gov.scot/publications/u…
2/ While (not for want of trying) we don’t yet know all details, I am worried that it will be slow and cumbersome (people will need sponsors arranged before entry to UK), lack proper support and safeguarding, and not be sustainable for length of time people may need to be here
3/ That is why @scotgov is offering to act as a ‘super sponsor’ - this would allow significant numbers to arrive here quickly and be temporarily accommodated while we work with local partners to arrange longer term housing (inc from volunteers) and arrange safeguarding & support

1/ Just chaired another @scotgov resilience meeting on weather. There are amber/yellow @metoffice warnings in place for all of Scotland as Storm #Corrie sets in - please heed the warnings and take care. Impacts from the storm are likely to be significant tonight & into tomorrow
2/ Work to repair the damage from Storm #Malik continues. Tens of thousands have had power reconnected already - however, many will remain off supply again tonight and some, especially in north east, could be off into Tuesday. Welfare arrangements are in place.
3/ Given the severity of the winds expected tonight, rail services are stopping at 6pm in the interests of safety. However, as far as possible, it is hoped that services will return to normal in the morning. Please follow @ScotRail for updates.

1/ It was a pleasure to chat with @SamBaker for The Shift, inc about menopause. Given my position & platform, I feel a responsibility to be open about my own experiences - but also real anxiety about it. My generation still feels the stigma & recalls all the HRT scare stories…
2/ The menopause (though it shouldn’t be) is mystifying for women, and accessing support & treatment still far too difficult.
For me, the public nature of my job adds to the anxiety of all it might entail (my ‘joke’ in the podcast about hot flushes during FMQs is a real fear!)
3/ But I’m sure I’d feel more prepared for what lies ahead if, in past years, there had been women in positions like mine able to talk about how they coped while still doing their jobs well.
So I feel a responsibility to do that now for the next generation - but with trepidation
