In the midst of our sorrow of the racist massacre in El Paso, the mass shooting in Dayton, & the passing of an American literary genius, Toni Morrison, an astute essayist of the power of culture in the presence extreme injustice; we’re reminded the Voting Rights Act passed today.
Freedom is not free. Many Americans have died for centuries at the hands of white supremacy terrorists, to force this America to live up to its creed. We commemorated this week of the racist murders of Goodman, Chaney, & Swerner who were helping fellow Americans to register to vote
From the inception of this country, white supremacy terrorists have murdered Native Americans, Latino Americans, and African Americans for power and wealth. 243 years later it hasn’t stopped. The AR-15 assault rifles are made in Kentucky and Mitch McConnell refuses to ban them.
Even on the wake of these massacres, those American lives murdered, aren’t worth giving up the profit he enjoys from the gun manufacturers, gun makers, and the NRA. In the tradition of slavery, money over morality.
The data even proves an assault weapon ban works. When we had a ban for those few years starting in ‘94- mass shootings went down. We live in a society that will justify indifference, apathy, and denial, as long as it produces wealth.
Toni Morrison said it best: “You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down”. America’s original sin, weighs us down, white supremacy ideology weighs us down, racism weighs us down. When will we ever choose to be that country that flies up to its stated values
The Blueprint for change lies in the Voters Rights Act. The battle for change is waged every time this bill comes up for renewal. The fact that it isn’t permanent law and has to be renewed is the evidence of an ongoing battle for equality and justice. Here is the way. Vote.
Fight to maintain the VRA. Vote out of office the men and women who put racism into policy. Vote into office this that will bring solutions to the table, instead of those who turn a blind eye to our massacres to enrich themselves with the blood money of gun violence
