Sunday morning well spent tracing the key bridges built by the British in 19th century
Commander in Chief bridge between Taj Connemara and Ethiraj College.Built in 1825
Researcher and historian D Hemachandra Rao explaing how boats used to come bringing firewood,salt and dry fish etc from Pulicat to Madras
Harris Bridge built in 1854-55 connecting Mount road with Pudupet.People protested as the the planned alignment of this bridge came in the way of a temple.This made the British to bring land acquisition law #Madras
St Andrews bridge connecting Egmore with Chintadripet was built in 1817
Law's bridge built around 1825 near Park Railway Station
St George bridge was constructed in 1805.Later renamed as Periyar bridge
Napier bridge 1869.Later modified in its present form by 1943.
Grant Duff bridge behind University of Madras (1878)
Wallajah bridge near Chepauk palace
The person who 1st proposed a bridge across this river was Elihu Yale,Governor of Madras.He is also the founder of @Yale University, USA
