Is it possible for Indian weddings to be eco-friendly &a low waste one?
This was a big question I had in my mind for many years. Then came an occasion to find d answers to my Big question. We had to plan for my parents in-laws Sathabhishekam(80th birthday& wedding ceremony) 1/n
As a family, we decided to do d following during d wedding,
1.Minimal flower decoration which otherwise goes waste after single use.
2.Utilisé reusable decorator materials like cloths&ribbons.
3.We went with banana leaf service & avoided buffets with disposable plates 2/n
4.We tried using mud baked tumblers for serving tea/coffee/water. Though it was a cumbersome process to source d suppliers, transport safe(Indian Railways🙏), cleanse them & check for leakages, it was worth all d efforts as the water served in those wares tasted good. 3/n
5. Return gifts was a cloth Vegetable Bag with seven partitions with an idea to promote the use of cloth bags instead of plastic bags. This bag will suit the shopping needs be it procuring vegetables or other provisioneries. 6. No use of plastic wrappers or flex banners 4/n
7.Returns gifts were distributed in paper bags
8.Excess food was distributed to the needy soon after the wedding
9.Minimal offerings were made during d homams conducted at d ceremony
10.All d cups used at dining to serve sweets were made of palm or bagasse with wood spoons 5/n
All these attempts were done on a trail basis. What I learnt after this was that, 1. it is really difficult to source eco friendly products bulk suppliers, 2. There is an illusion that the cost of the eco friendly products is very high than the commonly available single use 6/n
Plasticwares. Yes, actually it is slightly on a higher end! But considering d environmental benefits, it is worth to pay this slight high price.
We had about 600+ invitees who attended the ceremony, as the earthen wares went short, we had to use bottled waters at the end. 7/n
Planning & going for a low waste wedding was fruitful not only for d hearty reviews we got but for d sense of satisfaction we had.
The answer I found is - Yes! Eco-friendly& low waste weddings is possible in India without compromising d religious rituals ®ional culture. 8/n
I'm sharing these just to sensitise that small steps towards eco friendly living will give large results. I hope this long thread will help someone to plan their family events. Together we can!

This thread will detail out the basic information one should know about the Slender Loris and why the decalration of India's first wildlife sanctuary for Slender loris in Kadavur is a milestone measure in the history of conservation.
Usually people confuse between Lorises. There is a myth that Slender Loris is venomous and it's salaiva can kill humans
There are two types of Lorises in India - Slow Loris & Slender Loris. They both belong to primate family and are nocturnal. Slow loris is found in South Asian
In India, Slow loris is spread in the some forests of North East Indian states.
There are two species of Slender Loris,
- Red Slender Loris (IUCN: endangered) found in Srilanka
- Grey Slender Loris (IUCN: Near Threatened) found largely in South India
Tamilnadu Government declares India's first #Dugong Conservation Reserve at Gulf of Mannar & Palk Bay. Conserving dugongs means conserving it's habitat. Seagrass meadows is an important habitat in focus here.
Seagrasses are marine flowering plants, found on all continents except Antarctica. They have roots, stems, leaves, flowers &fruits, similar to land flowering plants (angiosperms) 2/n
Seagrasses are found along the coast, in clear, shallow waters that allow light for photosynthesis, to penetrate. Some species occupy the intertidal zone, the area between the highest tide line and lowest tide line, from which the sea retreats at low tide to expose the seabed 3/n
July29 - #InternationalTigerDay - to raise awareness about the dwindling number of Tigers & to encourage tiger conservation. It was created in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia.
What is this 'Tiger Summit'? Read 👇
In 2010, it came to light that d tiger numbers was an all time low. So the Tiger Range countries gathered at Russia and committed to an ambitious goal of Tx2 i.e to double the wild tigers population by 2022.
What are these Tiger Range Countries??
There are currently 13 tiger range countries- India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Russia, Cambodia, Thailand & Vietnam. India hosts the largest tiger population. (PC WWF)

This is a thread on #BlueFlag certification to the Beaches.
The Blueflag certification was given to 8 beaches in India by the international jury of IUCN, UNWTO, UNEP etc. International eco-label "Blue flag” is accorded by The Foundation of Environment Education, FEE Denmark.
‘BLUE FLAG” was accorded to
Shivrajpur (Dwarka-Gujarat),
Ghoghla (Diu),
Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka),
Kappad (Kerala),
Rushikonda (AP),
Golden (Puri-Odisha)
Radhanagar (A&N Islands)
India is also the first country in Asia-Pacific region to have achieved this feat in just 2 years’ time.
Japan, South Korea and UAE are the only other Asian nations to have beaches with Blue Flag credit. There are about 50 nations with Blue flagged beaches.
#Elephant is our national heritage animal. They are represented as drawings, sculptures, paintings and in many other forms. They are closely related to our culture, art, religions & traditions. Have added some of my sketches themed on the unique features of Elephant. Add yours.
The matriarch culture found in the #elephants makes them even better than the most civilised human race.
The young ones are best cared by all the adults and sub adults in the #elephant family.
