A really terrific and rigorous discussion last night about racism, lynching, civil rights in the age of Trump, public goods and reparations w/Ken Miller in Bridgehampton last night sponsored by @BHCCRCenter.
I look out in the audience last night & who do I see? Hon. Gabrielle McDonald! Former federal judge, judge on ICTY tribunal, fmr @NAACP_LDF atty. I litigated my first LDF case w/her as local counsel in TX. She told me when to stand up in ct; when to sit down. Amazing atty/mentor.
With Bonnie Cannon, the Executive Director of @BHCCRCenter where critical after school and community service support is provided directly to our children in the Hamptons.
People hear “Hamptons” and have one image in mind. But there is a strong, historic African American community fighting to hold on to their presence in the Hamptons. I was so pleased that many came out to join last night’s conversation.

🧵I took this beautiful gift as a sign last night. Nelba Marquez-Greene, Mom of Ana Grace, is one of the most extraordinary human beings I have ever encountered. Ana Grace stays with us b/c of her family’s determination & love. Alex Jones tortured these families who suffered…
…the unimaginable. He has monstrously led a campaign of gaslighting and assault on the spirit of Sandy Hook families & desecrated the memory of those murdered children. He is a ghoul. His return to this site completes its utter degradation. We are in a war for the human soul.
What is humanity? What is democracy? How can we build a country - a world - in which shared values of equality & justice are core aspirations? Platforming ghouls & allowing them to dominate our discussions, our thinking, our language, our law, our education systems is not the way.
Thank you @GeorgeTakei . Likewise the reality for Black people. We maneuver & do what allows us to fight another day. No President has ever fully embodied all that we want. We build coalitions & fight to keep them strong to increase our muscle, and keep our “eyes on the prize.”
But “dealbreakers” happen. Every voter has to decide for themselves what that is. But do I wish Al Gore had decidedly won in 2000! The U.S. would have been a leader in addressing the#1 issue for young ppl today - climate change. If the parents of today’s young ppl had come out…
..strong for Gore in 2000. He wasn’t perfect. But GWB? Well, you don’t need me to tell you. Ditto lackluster support for Carter and Mondale (neither perfect) that gave us Reagan. Whose presidency changed everything.
More on Musk. A sample of his replies. In response to the melting down of the Robert E. Lee statue - approved years ago by an actual Lee descendant - a poster claiming to be a descendant express his anger. Musk takes it up a notch.
Musk restored a right-wing poster who had previously been removed from Twitter for hateful conduct. Musk congratulates her on story in USA Today exploring how those she targets become targets of online threats.
Musk encourages viewing of an out of context video about white privilege and affirms the same right-wing poster’s opinion that “racism against white pol”
Is the real discrimination.
The release by SCOTUS a Code of Ethics is a big deal. Most revealing is the “Statement” that precedes the Code. The insistence that they have only created this b/c
so many ppl “misunderstand” their practice is peak gaslighting. It’s also the kind of small & begrudging statement
that reveals how agonizing this was for some members of the Court. Which means they felt compelled, forced to do something they didn’t want to do. Those members wanted to be clear that in their view, THIS IS NOT NECESSARY. And yet the creation of the Code proves they know IT IS.
As to the substance of the Code, the words “knowingly” and “knowing” are liberally dispersed, and the changes to how the Code for U.S. Judges defines when a judge’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned are telling. And frankly, concerning.
Again, this is in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions which bar collective punishment. Part III, Article 33. It has to matter. And yes the attack on civilians, the degrading treatment of women, desecration of bodies violates the Convention. We have to invoke intl law.
The point of law should be to provide guidance in times of crisis. When anger, vengeance, devastation and grief can cloud our decisionmaking. Have we learned nothing? These Conventions were enacted after the most brutal war the world has ever seen. redcross.org/content/dam/re…
For those saying that international law has no currency, that’s what ppl say about all laws. Criminal law, civil law. There are those saying the law should not be applied to the President. Let’s focus on elections. So we should just ignore violations?
While stories repeat endlessly about the Presidential race next year, there are so many important election stories deserving attention THIS YEAR. What elections are in your state/city ? PLEASE #LeaveNoPowerOnTheTable. Here are a few impt ones. Media, attention please.
