🧵I took this beautiful gift as a sign last night. Nelba Marquez-Greene, Mom of Ana Grace, is one of the most extraordinary human beings I have ever encountered. Ana Grace stays with us b/c of her family’s determination & love. Alex Jones tortured these families who suffered… …the unimaginable. He has monstrously led a campaign of gaslighting and assault on the spirit of Sandy Hook families & desecrated the memory of those murdered children. He is a ghoul. His return to this site completes its utter degradation. We are in a war for the human soul.

Thank you @GeorgeTakei . Likewise the reality for Black people. We maneuver & do what allows us to fight another day. No President has ever fully embodied all that we want. We build coalitions & fight to keep them strong to increase our muscle, and keep our “eyes on the prize.” But “dealbreakers” happen. Every voter has to decide for themselves what that is. But do I wish Al Gore had decidedly won in 2000! The U.S. would have been a leader in addressing the#1 issue for young ppl today - climate change. If the parents of today’s young ppl had come out…

More on Musk. A sample of his replies. In response to the melting down of the Robert E. Lee statue - approved years ago by an actual Lee descendant - a poster claiming to be a descendant express his anger. Musk takes it up a notch. Image Musk restored a right-wing poster who had previously been removed from Twitter for hateful conduct. Musk congratulates her on story in USA Today exploring how those she targets become targets of online threats. Image

The release by SCOTUS a Code of Ethics is a big deal. Most revealing is the “Statement” that precedes the Code. The insistence that they have only created this b/c
so many ppl “misunderstand” their practice is peak gaslighting. It’s also the kind of small & begrudging statement that reveals how agonizing this was for some members of the Court. Which means they felt compelled, forced to do something they didn’t want to do. Those members wanted to be clear that in their view, THIS IS NOT NECESSARY. And yet the creation of the Code proves they know IT IS.

Again, this is in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions which bar collective punishment. Part III, Article 33. It has to matter. And yes the attack on civilians, the degrading treatment of women, desecration of bodies violates the Convention. We have to invoke intl law. The point of law should be to provide guidance in times of crisis. When anger, vengeance, devastation and grief can cloud our decisionmaking. Have we learned nothing? These Conventions were enacted after the most brutal war the world has ever seen. redcross.org/content/dam/re…

One of the most infuriating qualities among those Republican who grandiosely & simplistically call for the end of the DOE is how smugly ignorant they are & thus dismissive abt the historical & contemporary reality of racism & education in this country. Here’s the Vivek version. Image They have no idea how to deal with racism or persistent racial disparities, so racism is “behind us.”

This man takes no resoonsibility for his failures. His tweets, his welcome & embrace of extremists, his capricious decisionmaking, juvenile stunts, disparagement of news sources ( NPR, NYT) and contempt for those who brought value to the brand, has “strangled” Twitter. NOT ADL. Image Now Musk is threatening to sue ADL for fighting to keep anti-Semitic speech ofc the platform. Is it just a matter of time before civil rights groups fighting against anti-Black racism & voter misinfornation on the platform are in this man’s crosshairs? Image

It’s time to say it: white supremacist violence is a national emergency. We need President Biden, the DOJ & DHS to treat it as such. cnn.com/2023/08/27/us/… Black people are victims of mass murder or the threat of mass murder in the Dollar Store, the grocery store, the Waffle House, bible study, college, walking on the street, driving, simply BECAUSE they are Black. These are conditions that existed during post-Reconstruction.

We are so damaged & divided that we are tolerating grave threats to our democracy. - Justice Thomas’ excesses, Trump abuse of the legal system, his explicit racism towards publuc officials, DeSantis’ thuggish attacks on democracy. It’s time to stand up & draw the line. We cannot allow this to continue. Perhaps we failed to act before. Perhaps acting now will produce a backlash. Yes, it will be called partisan. But we are facing an existential crisis that without a firm response will only further embolden this growing band of authoritarians.

Irrelevant. WOW. “This team built its brand on winning.” Yes.That gives you the obligation to demand payment in accordance w/your worth. Which was their central “stance.” But that’s not what you mean is it?Since you were a professional American athlete, let me try to educate you. If by “stance” you mean support for LGBTQ rights, let’s go there. Their captain is gay. We may not have long for it, but in 2015 the US Supreme Court upheld the right of gay ppl to marry on the grounds that Constitution entitles them to “equal dignity before the law.”

THREAD. And so it continues. Suppress the full truth about a racial program for nearly 100 years, then deny the ability of survivors to demand accountability & recovery. What a blow for these survivors & for this community. Again. There are many ways to suppress history. Book bans & censorship, of course. But this too. Lawyers have for 20 years attempted to litigate on behalf of survivors. They have been met w/every possible basis for dismissal. As the years go by, & survivors age.

Standing outside the Supreme Court after the announcement of the Shelby County v. Holder decision, which destroyed the most consequential protection in the Voting Rights Act - Section 5 preclearance. I said then that this ruling was catastrophic. I was not wrong. But even then…. …even then I did not predict how removing the protections for Black, Latino, Asian American & Native American voters in those places that had been covered by Section 5, would encourage Republicans to turn voter suppression into part of its national policy.

A THREAD. This woman was born in 1972. Two years later the President of the United States was compelled to resign from office after revelations about his abuse of power and corruption. His VP resigned b/c of unrelated illegal conduct. In the year she was born, white supremacists burned the Springfiekd Baptist Church in Greenville, SC, the site of many civil rights meetings and gatherings.

On Justice Alito’s “response” to the ProPublica piece. Whatever one might say abt its merits, Alito’s piece could work as a decision denying a motion to recuse. That’s why we need full financial disclosure. So that recusal motions/challenges can be made BEFORE THE CASE IS HEARD. This should be happening in real time in the litigation. Not years later w/a Justice framing it as a fight w/a media outlet. The process of disclosure & recusal should ferret this all out. Why would responsible justices resist this? B/c they don’t want us to know. Not acceptable.

Important read. Besides the depressingly slow pace & early timidity at DOJ in investigating coordination at the top, I’m struck by several issues confirmed here as particularly important for how we go forward: -First, we should not underestimate how the slow pace of confirmations delays urgently-needed departmental action
-Second, as I and others recognized, the public hearings of the House @January6thCmte were critical to spurring (shaming?) DOJ to speed up investigation at the top;

Utterly irresponsible and ignorant. Another super wealthy guy uninterested in facts, reading, or accuracy. Genius.
1) Biden did not “arrest” anyone. A soecial counsel appted by the AG made the charges… 2) What are “the crimes” which you claim are the same Trump & Biden. Trump is charged with “willful retention of Natl Defense Info; Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice; Corruptly Concealing Docs; Scheming to Conceal; Making False Statements & Representations.

When people ask me why I’ve given up on the #USMNT, this is why.I was a rabid fan through the 90s & early aughts. But at some point the league became captured by a commitment to mediocrity, a jingoistic USA! mentality that ended the remarkable progress we were making in the sport. Lack of accountability for catastrophic losses, recycling the same mediocre coaches, the lack of speed in our game, xenophobia, pretense that there is an “American style of play” to be preserved, & satisfaction w/mediocre performances. Having Lalas as a commentator & booster.

Have to depart with my sister @ProfMMurray on this. When you’re being pushed over the cliff and you are thrown a lifeline, you don’t lament the absence of a fence around the edge. At least not the first day! Seriously, I am frankly stunned to read 5 members of this Court make a… …clear and unequivocal affirmation that race consciousness is necessarily part of redistricting. And the clear anger from the dissent let’s me know this was hard fought. It’s not Section 5 to be sure. Or even Section 2. But it ain’t nothing, esp when you think of what racial….

As Musk joins the “targeting” of Target (just asking questions), it’s worth remembering that in the last two months the AG of Maryland & the AG of Illinois each released rpts documenting decades of ACTUAL abuse against thousands of children perpetrated..1/

I love you @andersoncooper. But that's not the choice. We hear Trump every day. His social media posts are reproduced. News stations & newspapers carry his statements & report on his every move. His followers lead the House of Representatives, and many state houses. The question is how should a responsible journalism outlet in a democracy, use its platform to cover this public figure. Knowing he's a bully, a liar, will talk over the moderator, will express racist & sexist views, why have an audience of his supporters to cheer him on?
