Good question. In the past there were times it could take a while to cross, like early am, when ppl go to work in the us. But I’ve never been in a stand still line 4 wide at the beginning of the bridge - which is several hundred yards long
The us under trump unilaterally has created a secondary checkpoint at the exact border instead of at the offices at the end, in order to keep people from making asylum claims. But that slows down traffic a lot. Still this is nuts
So the fake border guards at the middle of the bridge are just randomly halting the line. I’m on the other side now but it’s still crazy long. I’m assuming they have 2 agents checking passports in the office. Purposefully understaffing the checkpoints is increasingly common
And when I say purposeful I mean “you can see 10 agents standing around watching while two check passports for 500 people” kind of a thing.
You’ll be shocked to learn that the people this effects most are Mexican Americans who’s entire lives straddle the border, with work and family and sporting events and weddings etc etc on both sides.
There’s 10 car lines but only 3 are open, and traffic is backed up in Juarez for a mile (I walked it’s entire length) not to mention the feeder streets near the border that are jammed with cars.
And here’s the thing. There could be a perfectly good, reasonable explanation for this. But because of how the admin has treated immigrants and Latinos, nobody will ever believe that if it were true - which to be clear is doubtful.
A guy just passed out and slammed his head against the metal railing. We’ve been standing out here in the heat for an hour. The one silver lining, and it’s a grim one to be sure, is that he’s white and maybe that’ll make them start letting people through more quickly.
And yes, I am aware at how fucked up that sounds, but this is 2019 and hard ass reality is that the hundreds of brown old people and children dealing with this sure as hell aren’t gonna tug on official heart strings
A guy walked down to look inside and wonders of wonders, they only have one lane open to check passports. For at least a thousand people. Hurray American exceptionalism!
waiting in this line is nothing compared to the months we’re making people who have been raped and tortured in their home countries wait to even go in the building to ask for asylum. But if this is what American citizens have to go through on a regular ass Sunday night ...

One take away from @mayorcantrell's press conference that I hope doesn't get lost -- there isn't any widespread looting going on. The police say they've arrested "a few" people and charged them with looting, but we still don't knew what even those arrests were about.
too often words like looting get applied in disasters or other events in which people — almost always black — are either trying to just survive, or to paint a whole city or population as violent animals when in fact, very few people were doing what you'd reasonably call looting
Looting carries stiffer penalties than a regular B&E charge, which is why cops love to use it. plus, to their way of thinking it sends the message that "they're in charge" (the merits of that we can debate later). But functionally speaking ...

The thing about what’s going on in Portland right now is that CBP are almost everywhere. Their jurisdiction extends within 100 miles of the border or an international port of entry , so for instance they’re in Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville...
Granted, most are on the southern border. But they are one of the largest paramilitary organizations on earth, and certainly the most well equipped. And they’re entire ethos is based around violence. They’re essentially staged throughout the entire country.
These are poorly trained thugs who can’t get jobs in many other law enforcement agencies for a variety of issues, but thanks to substandard requirements get into cbp no problem.

This is a great @AdamSerwer joint on how, once it was clear covid was killing black and brown people more, racists started calling for an end to efforts to control it and insisting it was patriotic and right to sacrifice “some” lives. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
And it’s important that all of us who are of the melanin challenged persuasion to not simply nod along gravely and go about our lives. Or tweet outrage about how this is bad or “this is not America.” Because, obviously it’s bad, and more obviously it is exactly who we are.
We all need to sit with the fact that the leaders of this country and their prominent henchmen are at the point that they no longer even waste the time to hide their motivations. They figured out black folks are dying, and said “cool. Let’s get back to making money.”

The current millisecond news cycle environment is wildly unprepared and reckless when it comes to covering the development of vaccines and treatments for things like covid. These drugs/treatments need an enormous amount of testing, and retesting, and retesting of the retesting
And because so much of this is done by companies with profit margins on their minds, they’re subject to being pimped by PR departments far more aggressively than the science would dictate, which is catnip for reporters and producers working in an overstressed underfunded news biz
Which leads to stories about “potential break through!” or “vaccine could hit the shelves by September!” which not only gets the public excited, but sets off policy decisions by the small brained clown in the Oval Office.

Hey @mayorcantrell before doing this why don’t you fix my street like yall promised? Get some new pumps? nobody care that you work in a rat infested dump except you. But my neighbors and me care a lot about our cars not being destroyed b/c y’all are incompetent
And @mayorcantrell as somebody who’s covered politics for more than 20 years, I sincerely hope you fire whatever moron came up with this idea or allowed you to contemplate it longer than it took to tell you no. Just from the optics this is mind numblingly stupid
Madam Mayor, most of staff’s job is keeping you from looking like an asshole or an out of touch moron. That applies to smart but hard decisions, and stupid shit like this. TRUST ME, a reporter who’s spent a long time covering y’all, you need a good staff.

Y’all, I just ate one of the most delicious things ever. Chicken gizzards and octopus bathed in butter and cherry vinegar. Chef Alejandro at Campobaja in CDMX is a goddamn wizard
I would sacrifice most of you people to Satan using a dull spork if it meant I could eat my dude’s food everyday.
He made tostadas with raw scallops and pickled pork skin and served up some amazing Kampachi drizzled with olive oil and sea salt. I mean COME ON
