#DidYouKnow that Dinah Chase [Whipple] was born into slavery and lived in Newmarket, NH until she was freed on her 21st birthday, the same day she married Prince Whipple?
She then lived in Portsmouth, NH until her passing in 1846, at the age of 86.
Unusual for the times, being both Black and a woman, Dinah was literate and taught children for the Ladies Charitable African School. She likely taught in their house on High St, where Dinah and Prince moved 4 yrs after they married.
While the High St house was demolished in the early 1800s, a house, which still stands, was built on the original foundations and is part of the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail.
