I have never hidden my passion for neurology & psychoanalytic studies. I’m however glad that the @NGRPresident granted the Prison Service Reform idea with the assent to the bill. We pray it doesn’t end in a mere change of nomenclature but transforms our engagement within the CJS.
There is a troubling trend I have been observing for a while. We may have downplayed MentalHealth issues to the point of assuming it is only relevant when dealing with folks with Suicidal thoughts or the completely insane heading for the market square. This needs to be reviewed.
I have observed closely the demeanor of sex offenders, serial rapists, domestic abusers and violent criminals in the past 3 years to see a common pattern that must be addressed instead of mere throwing them in jail where their undiagnosed conditions will only get worse.
The growing number of sex offenders and pedophiles should worry any nation. A close study of recently caught offenders across Nigeria tells a story which must spike the curiosity of any medical student. This is an area of study we could help fund if we can collaborate.
I can’t forget the account of an event circa 2000, a 40-year old man was rushed to the University of Virginia Hospital emergency department while experiencing a severe headache. Many would conclude that he probably faked this to escape punishment for yet another crime.
In the previous year, he had developed an unusual increasing interest in pornography, including child porn. While he had a pre-existing interest in porn dating back to his teenage years, he denied a previous attraction to children. @MentallyAwareNG@StandtoEndRape
He had been in a stable marriage for two years. He did not have a history of psychiatric disorders or prior deviant sexual behaviour.
Throughout the year 2000, he collected a large number of pornographic magazines and increasingly visited Internet porn sites to satisfy his obsession with child porn. He started soliciting prostitution which he had not done before.
He desperately concealed his activities but continued to act on his sexual impulses, completely unable to restrain his sexual urges. He even made subtle sexual advances toward his stepdaughter. She informed her mother and she discovered his preoccupation with child pornography.
He was removed from the home, found guilty of child molestation and was ordered to undergo rehab for sex addiction or go to jail. While in rehab, he solicited sexual favours from staff and other patients and was expelled.
Sixteen years earlier, he had had a head injury that left him unconscious for two minutes, followed by two years of migraines. During the neurologic examination, he solicited female staff for sexual favours and was unembarrassed when he peed on himself.
He confessed he had had suicidal thoughts and rape fantasies. He complained of balance problems and an MRI scan was performed on him. An egg-sized brain tumour was discovered in his brain. Once it was removed, his sex obsession disappeared.
The tumour was located in the right lobe of the orbitofrontal cortex, an area of the brain responsible for inhibition, judgment and impulse control. It was the first case that brain damage was linked to paedophilia.
While his knowledge of right and wrong was intact, the tumour had destroyed his control of sexual impulses. Seven months after the tumour removal and completing the rehab program, he returned home.
He complained of headaches and secretly collected porn again. An MRI scan revealed that the tumour had come back and after it was removed, his behaviour disappeared.
For me this is scary. How do we intend to correct some people whose brain dysfunction is causing them to do things they can’t control or even defend? Could this be an isolated case or can more bizarre cases be found in relation to this enough to trigger an expedition?
In another similar case, a 64-year-old well-respected pediatrician was caught while enacting sexually inappropriate behaviour towards a child in a kindergarten doctor’s office.
He clearly had lost all judgment because his paedophilic urges were carried out in a risky manner leaving the office door wide open.
His wife observed he had gradually changed with easy frustration and irritability followed by subtle behavioural disinhibition. His MRI scan revealed a large tumour that displaced the hypothalamus, which is responsible for sexual orientation & compressed the orbitofrontal cortex.
After the tumour was removed, all the abnormal behaviour including paedophilic urges, disappeared. These two cases raise an interesting question: to what extent are these two men culpable?
Recent studies have estimated 25–87% of prison inmates suffered some sort of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in their life and indicated associations between TBIs and criminal-like behaviour. TBI-related problems can complicate their management and treatment. scientificamerican.com/article/trauma…
Do we have routine checks on our inmates or convicted felons in Nigeria to actually determine why they act the way they do? When people commit heinous offenses do we at least check their brains for injuries to fully understand the issue? braininjuryaustralia.org.au/wp-content/upl…
The growing rate of violent crimes even from those abusing power in leadership positions, domestically and those in authority with security agencies may not be absolved from traumatic brain injuring. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
With the graph of the traits observed over time in our dying society, majority are experiencing mental health problems such as severe depression, anxiety, anger control issues, self-restraint, alcohol and substance abuse. It is common amongst our security operatives as we know.
This makes it difficult for them to respond to disciplinary action in prison, to understand and remember rules, and anger issues can get them in dangerous incidents with other inmates. They also have a higher rate of recidivism. There are many examples even on social media.
The spirit of the law is that responsibility for a crime is reduced when a defendant’s cognitive ability is compromised by illness or injury. This means that people need to be tested soon after being arrested.
Many people who are in prison shouldn’t be there due to this lack of diagnosis. There need to be increased health screenings and rehab treatments and improved coordination between family, community mental health services, GPs and the school system.
The justice system will have to move away from retribution and focus more on rehabilitation. It doesn’t change the purpose of the justice system to reform their behaviour and provide safety for the rest of society.
If a criminal is utterly beyond repair, brain damage or not, (s)he still needs to be locked away. But it might help many others who might benefit from treatment as the two examples above. atlasofscience.org/pedophilia-eme…
The above was also discussed of late by Huyen Nguyen while reviewing bizarre mental conditions. The key thing here is that it could be anyone we love in our family displaying sudden behavioral change. We need to engage better instead of resorting to jungle justice. #MentallyAware
We can’t rule out the fact that the situation of the country is putting a mental strain of most people. I believe to punish people who are merely acting based on their affliction is double jeopardy. This will provide jobs for professionals. It won’t kill us to test offenders.
Just in case those culpable are reading this, let me clarify. This is no excuse for crimes against humanity. It also doesn’t suggest every diabolical soul out there has a brain tumor. Some people are just possessed by demons. But it takes nothing to verify mental health.

It is a shame how in the bid to incentivize bad behavior, we castigate the consequences of the condemnable actions of those shaming our nation, instead of addressing the real issue. How do we hope to control how others respond to the primitive actions of those we are shielding?🤔
The moment you begin to say “we are not all like that” there is a problem. Arresting a thief for stealing need no defense by those that share his religion or ethnicity. It is not a judgement on his race but his action and he must take responsibility for the consequences.
If not for hypocrisy, when we all condemned the Culture of Impunity within the police, no one would dare raise an objection on the defense that not all Police officers are guilty of impunity. We held everyone responsible as expected that they all must caution their colleagues.
There’re certain fundamentals that can’t be breached based on sentiments. Pilots must have uncorrected distance visual acuity no worse than 20/70 in each eye, & vision must be correctable to 20/20 or better in each eye. #GettingItRightNG🇳🇬
It doesn’t matter if your tribe/religion is not represented enough in the profession. Bend the rules and risk human lives in droves with certainty of the compromise & ruin of the mode of transportation.
Stampeding the blind to lead the blind is counterproductive. #Standards 🎙
Pilots must have uncorrected distance visual acuity no worse than 20/70 in each eye, and vision must be correctable to 20/20 or better in each eye. Enlistees' vision must be fully evaluated during a pre-entry qualification physical.
Yet, this fellow tweeted photos of @renoomokri’s one year old daughter and sicced his followers on her to the extent she got death threats. Who really should be banned?
Character assassination & serial criminal defamation is NOT investigative journalism. We know reputable journalists in our clime. They are not hands for hire by politicians to impugn the integrity of others. I was alarmed at the number of calls I received when I offered to help..
…you are a young man whose future is bright if only you get out of your own way. You are not a wanted man & being on self exile won’t grant you asylum in any sane country. This explains why you were declined by the UK, Belgium, US, Canada & Germany.
…attempt at foisting an ethnic power grab instead of regarding & understanding the physiology of democratic forces may be the undoing of this entire campaign.
“This Igbo ethnic albatross is in the view of most watchers of the times as ‘one big hurdle’ that HE Peter Obi and…
…his supporters must cross if he is to attract the necessary cross-national support without which it is impossible to win a presidential election in Nigeria.”
Peter Obi is not the problem. Most of the unhinged bigoted supporters are.
When clouded by anger in the collective we lash out to bottle the blame & focus on the problem rather than look inward. The obstacle is the path. You’re like the Joseph whose destiny is already ordained focusing on the evil acts of his brothers based on the envy of his dreams.
Oh, how can God say Joseph is a potential Minister in Egypt when he cannot even win his the affection of his brothers, who eventually sold him as a slave? Despite the illustrious dreams he was lied upon & sent to prison. Those he helped in prison forgot him there. It took years!
Slowly but surely, the gifts and discipline developed in obscurity spoke and never lied and he was remembered and God’s plan for him came to pass. The years of travails contributed to the perfection of his gifts & sharpened his horizon. God is not a man that He should lie.
The North enjoy their united front, while the South allow sentiments to divide them. The Igbos are not the enemy. Social injustice is. Igbo people have sacrificed too much to attain excellence & must never be sold as ethnic champions. This has been my take from day one. 🎙
We want a good system that works for all. Political history shows that the Igbos have supported anything based on merit and justice. They have voted against their interest so many times. They know a bad market from afar. Competence is better selling point not ethnicity.
The 2023 election is not about tribalism or religion. It should be based on competence and we must all speak with our votes. Whoever emerges will be our President not just for the people that campaigned or abused others in the process. Nation building should trump bigotry.
