Tender from HAL for outsourcing of Single Crystal Blade castings for HPT and LPT. Interesting. My best guess is this is for Adour 871 engines which power IAF's Hawk AJT fleet.
Not the first tender from HAL related to Single Crystal Blades. There was one similar tender for SCB, which I suppose meant for HPT of HTSE-1200 few years back and then a follow up tender for TBC coatings for the same.
And interestingly, GTRE has floated tender for machining and TBC quoting for SC blades and vanes meant for HP Turbine early 2019. Which engine it is meant for exactly, is anyone's guess. Kaveri engine as of now is known to be using DS blades only.
Even more interestingly, GTRE is looking for 3D printed HPT Nozzle Guide Vanes out of In718 using DMLS technology.

In Single Crystal Blade technology, the investment casting of SC is one piece of puzzle. From stock casting to final blade needs two more critical technologies
1. Laser drilling for cooling holes 2. Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC). While DMRL has been making SCB castings for a decade now, we lacked these key technologies. But it looks like some steady progress is happening on TBC at least. DMRL indicated preliminary success in
Electron Beam Physical Vapour Deposition (EBPVD) based Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium 7YSZ coating in 2017 (this is the cutting edge tech). Now, in 2019 they are looking to estb a pilot facility for EBPVD based TBC application. ARCI also working in EBPVD and seems to have made good
progress. It is likely that ARCI was the one which did TBC for HAL's HTSE-1200 HPT blades and vanes. Whether DMRL is following separate path or its in collabaration with ARCI is not clear. But definitely steady progress on TBC technology. It seems multiple instances of tech dev
is happening in key technology areas like SCB, TBC, Composites and so on. Much is going on in the background, but real test is to productionise and operationalise the technologies. We can definitely develop all those "super-secret" technologies given proper push from the top.
Correction - HPT is for a TurboShaft engine which means most likely - HTSE-1200. The LPT blades are for TurboFan are definitely for Adour 871, as far as I can see.

This thread. Given this situation it seems GE can keep hopes up.

I want to make a point here - note how the best of the best in the world still struggle in the Jet Engine field routinely. Their Air Force make do with the best that their Ind can make for them and move ahead while
working with them in parallel to improve things. They have all the money to do all the R&D and buy all the stuff they want to buy and yet, the most powerful airforce still has to make significant concessions for the new programs, even till 3 decades into it and perhaps for whole
product lifecycle. Only in India, any short fall from intended specs are projects as abject failures and used to run down the program routinely. LM is about to roll out 1000th F35 from its assy line, and it is yet to get official full rate production clearance. Imagine if

A very lucid and crisp presentation by Grp Cpt Prabhu on a complex matter of developing AAR capability for the very first time in India. Thanks for sharing this gem.

Some key takeaways for enthusiasts

1. A conceptually simple looking task in an aircraft development becomes
incredibly complex fundamentally because of a large number of variables impacting the flight. This not only includes the environmental & human factors but also a large number of aircraft systems involved in achieving any particular task.

2. The large no if variables demand
Commensurately large & complex multidimensional testing program (flight, ground testing & analytical investigations like CFD studies). However the practical restrictions necessitate use of a much smaller test plan, which in turn makes the debugging evn more complicated. This

#AeroIndia2021 Thread Part 2.

Part 1 link -

So some juicy updates have starting rolling in from the stalls at the AI.
First look at the #TejasMK2 #MWF model by @ReviewVayu.

The model looks in much better finish than the last time. Though I see some changes. There is a Boundary layer spillway seen over the wing. And a modified fuselage side walls for canard mountings. @Indrani1_Roy
Of course changes were to be expected from the configuration from AI2019 given the design was still evolving. But is the one we see currently the final frozen Preliminary design config..?

#AeroIndia2021 Thread.

When Airshows world over are getting cancelled, Aero India is going ahead with a shorter version focused on business side. I have no doubt, it is going to be a success with all the precautions and measures in place.

Though its not ideal this time for
non-biz visitors like me, I am looking forward to the virtual platform. It looks cool and I hope it will be continued for all the future events too. No Aero India Technical Seminars, which is a bummer though.

Anyway, let the show begin.
#SarasMK2 Brochure. Its looks like its embellished with all the bells and whistles. Its better than Do228 in practically every sense. ImageImageImageImage

Human Vs AI is about to start.

Interestingly, Lockheed's AI bot lost the competition in the Finals where they had pitted F16 against F16 against a AI bot called Heron (must be from a small company, as the Final was being called David vs Goliath match).
Ha. The AI "agent" (as they are called) by Heron systems has defeated a highly qualified Human F16 pilot by 5-0...!!

The Heron AI Agent has displayed absolutely incredible nose pointing ability and getting the target in the gun firing cone which made the competitors,
whether AI or Human to shake it off very difficult.

Yes, this is bit simplistic settings and the Human pilot is a bit disadvantaged having to virtually fly the Fighter, but then the AI bots are also relatively primitive.

Great insights generated from the whole program which

CCP's official statement. China is accusing India crossed the LAC.

India of course denies any intrusion.

While Indian Army's official statement has already confirmed 3 KIA including the CO of the Battalion manning the LAC at #GalwanValley, there are unconfirmed reports coming that the PLA has suffered 4 or 5 casualties. We will have to wait for an official statement from CCP.
