Headed to #APSA2019 and Interested in conflict, prejudice reduction, and field-experiments in MENA? Join us on Thursday, 2:00pm at Hilton (Jefferson West). @aasiegel @salma_mousa_ @David_Romney and I will present our papers, @zeitzoff will discuss, and Donald Green will chair. Image
I enjoyed reading the other papers on my panel a lot, and I learnt so much from their creative takes on conflict, prejudice reduction and experimental design. So here are very brief summaries of the paper on the panel:
@aasiegel will present evidence from an experiment in the Arab twitter-sphere + survey experiment in 🇱🇧 demonstrating that elite-endorsed messages that prime common religious identity reduce hate speech online. Image
@salma_mousa_ will present her field experiment on intergroup contact and social cohesion in 🇮🇶. She shows that assigning Christians displaced by ISIS to ⚽️ teams with Muslims affects a host of behavioral outcomes well after the league is over. Image
@David_Romney will present his work on in-group policing in Israel. Through a unique experimental design, he demonstrates that moral/practical frames of persuasion increase support for policing, but moral frames can hurt a critic's credibility. Image
Lastly, I leverage the random assignment of Jewish patients to Arab/Pal doctors in 21 🏥 in 🇮🇱 to identify the fx of intergroup contact on prejudice . I show that brief contact with an Arab/Pal👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ reduces prejudice amongst Jewish patients Image

Short 🧵 re: WP w/ @ryan_brutger @jkertzer @dustintingley @jrenshon:

TLDR: we design & test a framework to guide experimenters design choices around 3 elements of abstraction in vignettes:
🔸Actor Identity
🔸Contextual Detail
Bottom Line:
Most design choices around abstraction in experimental vignettes are less consequential than social scientists often expect. However, adding context into vignettes can attenuate ATEs, and invoking salient real world actor can amplify ATEs.
🔸Scholars often allude to design choices re:abstraction in experiments as a tradeoff between control & generalizability
🔸But its not clear that such tradeoffs exist! & there is limited evidence demonstrating how these choices might moderate experimental findings

Short 🧵 on my new working paper:

▪️Main Point: Information about minority representation in healthcare institutions reduces prejudice & promotes preferences for political inclusion (Evidence from 🇮🇱 &🇺🇸)

Abstract Attached Image
▪️Context: In the 1st wave of #COVIDー19 many discussed the role of Arab docs in 🇮🇱 healthcare (e.g. this 🔥 campaign, h/t @shirnosa)
▪️Building on my wp on *contact* w docs ( I set out to test how *info* abt Arab docs fx prejudice
▪️My main intuition was that informing 🇮🇱s re: the % of Arab healthcare workers in hospitals will ↘️ prejudice and promote pol. inclusion
▪️To test this expectation, I implemented a survey experiment in Israel in mid-April at the hight of the 1st wave of #COVIDー19 (see timeline) Image

I’ve been wanting to write sth abt @PeterBeinart piece re:🇮🇱/🇵🇸

I think that the 1/2 state debate overemphasizes broad pol arrangements over ppl, their immediate enviornments, and behaviors.

Regardless of 1/2 state, Jews and Palstinins will continue living sidebyside 1/n
In this @POMEPS piece I try to provide an intuition abt how we can make the reality of sidebyside living more peaceful. To do so, I discuss social science research on segregation, integration, and intergroup relations. 2/n

I think we can learn a lot from recent research in 🇮🇱, and other contexts, abt what local realities promote tolerance. Yet, I also believe that there r many unknowns, and that promoting tolerance in 🇮🇱 requires rigorous evaluation of policies 3/n

🚨New WP with the amazing Lotem Bassan-Nygate🚨

Focusing on Israel we demonstrate that electoral competition ↗️ affective polarization, while cross-party cooperation ↘️ polarization.

Short 🧵: Image

Competitive elex are a crucial component of democracy. However, building on SIT we expect them to ↗️ affective polarization. Therefore, we consider an institutional remedy for election driven polarization: cross-party cooperation in the form of unity government.
*Study 1*

We leverage the random assignment of respondents to interview dates across 7 🇮🇱 elex studies (shoutout to INES!), and demonstrate that respondents interviewed closer to election date, when party competition is more salient, report polarized attitudes. Image
