Today was my last day working at the Gov of Alberta. Here are a few lessons from my experience: 1. Bureaucrats are not the enemy. They want to engage. They want to learn. They want to do better. They are fighting against demoralization, dehumanization, & objectification.
2. Don't believe politicians when they talk about valuing evidence- based decision-making. In reality, they force public servants to perform "decision-based evidence making." Or, they ignore evidence all together.
3. The public has no concept of how much unilateral decision-making power politicians have...how many times politicians use their office to coerce the civil service, against their expert advice, into supporting decisions that are harmful and/or unproductive.
I feel fortunate to have worked in gov. There's lots of room for people to do good work, but it's limited by politicians who micromanage, don't know what they're doing, don't know (or care) what is appropriate for their office, & put personal motives in front of elected promises
