1/9 Thread Subject: Age

With candidates’ age being discussed & considered (legitimately), here’s a quick historical & factual thread on the topic. No commentary

Tweet #4 includes 6 Democratic presidents. Notes:

1. 1900-present

2. Only presidents ELECTED DIRECTLY TO OFFICE, not by ascendancy (TR, Truman, LBJ); because voters could not consider their age at the time they became president

3. Their age 16 months prior to inauguration

That’s it. Like I said, no commentary.

Another factoid, not directly related to age:

Reagan, HW Bush & Nixon are often cited as presidents who needed multiple attempts to win.

But you know what? To the best I can figure no Dem in the modern two-party system has needed more than one shot*.

(*FDR was 1920 VP nominee)

President-Elect Biden’s Victory

Doing anything last done by FDR isn’t easy. And while it’ll take time to process 2020, some results we have make a compelling argument: Joe Biden’s was the toughest of the four defeats of an incumbent seeking RE-election dating back 100 years.
2/

Economy

In 1928 Herbert Hoover faced what to this day was the worst economic period in US history.

In 1980 & 1992, Jimmy Carter & George HW Bush faced steep economic downturns.

While 2020 is devastating and the worst since the Depression COVID made it politically distinct.
3/

Intra-party support:

In 1980, Carter had to fend off fellow Democrat Ted Kennedy.

In 1992, Pat Buchanan was a thorn in Bush’s side reflecting tension within the GOP.

In 2020, trump enjoyed complete fealty from ~90% of the Republican Party. No meaningful dissent whatsoever.

.@SavannahGuthrie is showing exactly how to handle donald trump.
A huge tell he’s intimidated by @SavannahGuthrie is that he hasn’t barked “excuse me” at her.
He’s losing 1/2 a point per minute. By 8:39pm he will be at zero.

6 months 28 days since trump was rushed to the hospital without explanation.

Which is in itself an explanation.
Struggling with the water glass was telling.

But what was on full display today was his longtime balance problem.

Specifically: negotiating stairs, slopes, ramps, uneven ground. All caught on camera on multiple occasions.

These are all symptoms of 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step. Thx @realDonaldTrump for daring the mainstream media to cover your health after your tweet...

trump was taken to the hospital EIGHT DAYS AGO.

@drsanjaygupta: ‘What happened is unusual: an unscheduled hospital visit for very routine testing could‘ve been done at the White House... took everyone by surprise, including much of the hospital staff.’
cnn.com/2019/11/24/hea…
“We know that Trump is 73 years old, has heart disease and is clinically obese. For any man of that age and medical history, an unexpected visit to the hospital is concerning.”

@drsanjaygupta

“Over the past week, I have spoken to doctors who've previously worked at the White House and those who are currently in touch with the White House. They all say that what happened last weekend is unusual.”

This can’t just be the horror of the day with a new one the day after and the day after and in a week someone jokes “I’m old enough to remember when.” It can’t be added to the pile.

It’s its own category.

And yes, I’ve been paying fucking attention.
One would normally say it will take someone being killed before something is done.

But getting someone killed is exactly its purpose. It would be their mission accomplished.
Context from the @nytimes:

This video was shown at trump’s Miami hotel by an organization supporting trump. The weekend event was for trump supporters and attended by Don Jr and Sarah Sanders and what will certainly turn out to be many other rotten souls.
