I’m at the Grant Harvey Centre in #Fredericton for jury selection. The jury will determine if Matthew Raymond is fit to stand trial. @CTVAtlantic
Raymond is accused of killing four people in a shooting on the city’s north side in August 2018.
Jury selection is at the arena because of the large number of potential jurors called for the case.
We’re beginning with a pre-trial hearing in a dressing room of the arena. Reporters are standing at the doorway of the room, while lawyers are sitting at tables set up in a makeshift courtroom.
We’re just waiting for Justice Fred Ferguson to arrive.
Outside this makeshift courtroom, potential jurors are still lined up, well outside the doors of the arena.
Raymond has been brought into the dressing room. He’s wearing the orange jumpsuit, unshaven.
Alison Menard is here as a friend of the court. Nathan Gorham is here has Raymond’s lawyer.
Justice Ferguson has arrived.
Much of what’s being discussed is the jury process that will occur today.
And Justice Ferguson says he’s going to put a publication ban on everything said during the fitness hearing. That hearing will begin once the jurors are chosen.
Court has adjourned. Raymond has left the room.

Insp. Kimberly Quartermain, a critical incident commander, says it was a male who was barricaded today in his own home, but voluntarily left around 3:40 today.
It was a neighbour who contacted the police. They saw a male with a firearm. Not sure if it was outside or inside the residence. The male is 28 years old, and police “have had previous contact” with him.
Police are aware of two long guns, a bullet proof vest and knives in the residence. The residence is still being secured. No shots were fired.
I'm back in court this afternoon for the Matthew Raymond trial -
Jury is in the room, cross examination has continued of Alex Pate. The Crown is asking about prior interviews/court appearances where Raymond was upset, spoke out, and in some cases, yelled during a proceeding.
We're listening to another audio recording, from June 18, 2019.
Justice Ferguson is explaining to Raymond that what he says in the courtroom can be used as evidence. Raymond says he has been asking to speak to his lawyer.
Crown completes its questions.
Defence begins again.
We can identify him only as Jeffrey because of a publication ban.
He says he recalls Raymond talking about the earth being flat and conspiracies that high-level government workers ran the world.
"When we came in he always told us to turn our phones off or put them in the truck off the car...I told him no one's listening to him, no one cares...he just had it in his head that he knew things."
Court has resumed this morning for the trial of Matthew Vincent Raymond.
I feel I should say, some of what I’ll be tweeting over this trial will be difficult to read and potentially triggering. Please keep that in mind if you’re following along. (File photo)
A paramedic who responded August 10/2018 is the first to take the stand this morning. She says at about 10:30 this morning “things actually started happening.”
She describes learning that her ambulance would be transporting the suspect to hospital. It was her second day on the ambulance.
“I was only in charge of taking vitals...and then they started...doing their head to toe assessment.”
