I’m back in court for day 6 of the #sharif trial. We are expecting to hear from police & the pedestrians run over by the uhaul. Here’s my story from yesterday:
Today the accused, Abdulahi Sharif, is not wearing an orange jumpsuit. He’s wearing jeans & an sweater.
First witness was a driver whose car was hit by the uhaul. She followed the uhaul into the alley way.
Next witness is a tactical flight officer w EPS. He was flying the Air 1 helicopter.
He says at 11:30 PM he heard over police radio that there was a criminal flight involving a uhaul. He says they weren’t able to assist with the police pursuit. When the copter arrived on scene the uhaul had already been flipped over.
Next witness was a young woman who was in a vehicle on Jasper ave, stopped at a red light. “We were driving when we heard sirens. I looked to the left, and saw a uhaul speeding by and a bunch of cop cars following the uhaul.”
She says the uhaul was going about 60-70 km/h. She says there was four cars infront of her, a fully loaded lane of coming traffic & a lot of pedestrians walking around as well.
Paul Biegel now taking the stand. He was at the pint on sept 30th, 2017.
He says he left the Pint to have a cigarette.
Biegle: “right when I went to lit it, he jumped outta the way (his friend) that’s when I was struck in the back by the uhaul van.”
“After I got hit— I was launched towards the pint. There was a cement barrier, I had fallen over those. After I hit the wall I fell on the ground on my stomach. And that’s when I see him (uhaul) strike the other fellow.”
“He was driving really fast. I would say aggressively. It looked like a police chase you would see on T.V” I
He spent the night at the hospital. He was on crutches for a couple weeks (for his knee) & needed physiotherapy.
“ I wasn’t able to play hockey. And I was lucky to go back to work on modified duties.” He is a gas plant operator.
Crown asks if he had any psychological affects from the attack. “That was the hardest part. Depressed few months after it happened. I battled that for 6 months, still battle it today.”
“I didn’t play hockey. I was antisocial. I have anxiety. Something I didn’t feel before. That’s the biggest thing that’s still around.”
The second pedestrian hit in the alley that night now taking the stand. He says it got hot inside the Pint so he decided to step outside.
He says there were 10-20 people in the alleyway.
“I don’t have too much memory of that period of time. I remember walking down the steps. I do have some memory of talking to some people. I have brief memory of turning towards the lights, but for the most part, not 100 % sure.”
“I have brief memory of being inside of an ambulance. Then coming to in the hospital with my mom and girlfriend there.”
“I was on a spineboard w a c-collar on. A few cops around me as well. They let me know what was going on. I was in quite a bit of pain.” He was given morphine.
He was released from hospital the next day. Feeling very stiff and sore. Very foggy. He had a pretty good limp.

Monday: RCMP tells me there are NO investigations into the violence that cancelled an anti-racism rally in Red Deer.
Tuesday: after our story goes viral, RCMP launches an investigation.
RCMP said they were not expecting this kind of violence even though there were online threats against protesters made days before. The violence came as no surprise to the racialized community who have been out protesting anti-racism for weeks in central Alberta.
Some background: 2 weeks ago an anti-racism protester was attacked by a truck in Ponoka. The group held a news conference to discuss the hit & run but it was crashed by people with known connections to hate groups. RCMP were there. My story:

The city wants these campers near Whyte Ave out by by 10 AM this morning. While they are nervous about losing their temporary homes, they aren’t going anywhere. #yeg
Organizers tell me city officials brought in these garbage bins yesterday. Campers chained the bins together in hopes of blocking police from entering this one alley. #yeg
Campers have created a barricade around the main entrance into the camp using lime scooters. #yeg

Edmonton police is holding a media show-and-tell of it’s new police equipment, including this new
Armoured vehicle. While the vehicle was budgeted and ordered in 2017 (costing $500K) it comes during a time of public concern regarding the militarization of police. #yeg
In addition to the “Black Wolf” EPS has purchased drones, a new Mobile Action Centre & carbine rifles. Police say “everything here has a purpose. We have picked the stuff that will truly benefit us.” #yeg
EPS’ new Mobile Action Centre truck comes at a cost of $370K. It will replace a 20 year old an existing unit. #yeg Image

At noon will we will get an update on what happened last Thursday during an anti-racism rally in Ponoka. RCMP are investigating after an anti-racism demonstrator was hit by a truck during the rally. My story from last week:

Organizers from Black & Indigenous Alliance (who are organizing the press conference) have not arrived yet—- however there are already “counter-protesters” here.
Counter-protesters are trying to interrupt a press conference organized by Black & Indigenous Alliance.

I’m in court in this morning where Deng Mabiour, the man accused of killing a family doctor at a medical clinic, is expected to make a court appearance (via video).
google.ca/amp/s/edmonton…
Mabiour makes a court app via video from the remand centre. He’s in a blue jumpsuit. Wearing a mask & handcuffed. He complains about standing up— and takes a sit on the floor. When the judge asked him if he received a copy of the charges against him, he says “I don’t know”.
When asked if he understand the charges he says he “killed his family doctor for a good reason” . He keeps asking for a chance to tell his side why he killed his family doctor. He says he does not want a lawyer.

Flowers, cards laid to rest in front of this Red Deer walk-in clinic after a doctor was killed yesterday during a horrific attack. RCMP will be speaking to media at 12 PM.
A former colleague puts down a frame photo of Dr. Reynolds. “His children was his life.”
“He was the most kind, loving person ever. He was a jokester. He was just very very kind.”
