Yesterday evening, three LAPD Metropolitan Division K-9 Officers were struck by gunfire while conducting a search in Hollenbeck Division. The officers were transported to a local hospital and were listed in stable condition.
The Suspect, who was pronounced deceased at scene, has been identified as Jonathan Magana, Date of Birth 09/21/1990.
Today, we expect two of the officers to be released from the hospital.
The third officer is expected to remain in the hospital to receive additional medical treatment, and on behalf of the LAPD, we thank the LA City Fire Department and hospital staff who have provided the best possible treatment to the injured officers.
Around 4:10 this afternoon LAPD Central Division began receiving radio calls of a man armed with a gun committing several crimes in the area of 8th and Broadway. What we know now is that the suspect had initially approached a man on the sidewalk near 8th and Broadway.
The suspect held a gun to the man’s face and pulled the trigger. Fortunately the gun did not fire. The suspect then went to a business in the 700 block of Broadway. When he entered the business there were three family members inside. One of them was a 14 year old.
The suspect pointed the gun at the group and fired at them. One of those rounds grazed the side of the 14 year olds head. He’s currently at a local hospital receiving medical treatment and is expected to survive. The suspect then proceeded to the area 6th and Spring.
On Saturday, August 14, 2021, around 2:00 p.m., an assault with a deadly weapon occurred near the intersection of 1st Street and Spring Street. During a protest, the suspect used a knife or a sharp object to stab the victim once in the upper right chest area.
On September 1, 2021, detectives from Major Crimes Division arrested Eric Cohen, 30 years old and a resident of Long Beach. Cohen was booked for Attempted Murder and is being held on a one-million-dollar bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.
Multiple search warrants were served in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The investigation is ongoing.

LAPD has seen an increase in the use of the Community Online Reporting Service (CORS). Year to date, total crimes reported on CORS increased 75% (36,487 vs 20,801), Lost Property reports increased 39% (1,390 vs 1,001) & Traffic Collisions reports increased 755% (13,895 vs 1,626).
In 2021, LAPD Dispatchers have diverted 5,902 incoming calls to CORS, 906 calls to @211LACounty and 561 calls to @MyLA311.
In 2021, LAPD Dispatchers have also diverted 839 mental health calls to @DidiHirsch Mental Health Services.
Today around 11:20 Hollywood area officers responded to the 6700 block of Hollywood Blvd. They were responding to several separate radio calls of a man armed with a gun. The comments of the radio call indicated it was a male white armed with a handgun walking on Hollywood Blvd.
When officers arrived in the area they saw a male matching the description armed with a handgun. At that time there was an officer involved shooting. The man was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he has died.
There is a replica handgun at scene. No officers were injured. A female who was nearby was transported to a local hospital for an injury sustained during the incident.
FID Detectives are interviewing witnesses and people who may be the victims of assaults by the suspect.
Today at about 9:30 AM, West Valley Patrol Officers responded to the 8000 block of Reseda Blvd for a radio call involving a possible death at one of the apartments. The officers went inside an apartment and discovered 3 children at scene.
LA City Fire Department personnel pronounced all 3 children deceased at scene. Investigators from Robbery-Homicide Division and Juvenile Division will be conducting this investigation. The children all appear to be under the age of 5 years old.
The cause of death has yet to be determined, as well as a motive. At this time we are asking for the public's help in locating a person of interest in this case, a female Hispanic 30 years old named Liliana Carrillo.
