Yesterday evening, three LAPD Metropolitan Division K-9 Officers were struck by gunfire while conducting a search in Hollenbeck Division.  The officers were transported to a local hospital and were listed in stable condition.

The Suspect, who was pronounced deceased at scene, has been identified as Jonathan Magana, Date of Birth 09/21/1990.

Today, we expect two of the officers to be released from the hospital.

Around 4:10 this afternoon LAPD Central Division began receiving radio calls of a man armed with a gun committing several crimes in the area of 8th and Broadway. What we know now is that the suspect had initially approached a man on the sidewalk near 8th and Broadway. The suspect held a gun to the man’s face and pulled the trigger. Fortunately the gun did not fire. The suspect then went to a business in the 700 block of Broadway. When he entered the business there were three family members inside. One of them was a 14 year old.

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, around 2:00 p.m., an assault with a deadly weapon occurred near the intersection of 1st Street and Spring Street. During a protest, the suspect used a knife or a sharp object to stab the victim once in the upper right chest area.

On September 1, 2021, detectives from Major Crimes Division arrested Eric Cohen, 30 years old and a resident of Long Beach. Cohen was booked for Attempted Murder and is being held on a one-million-dollar bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

LAPD has seen an increase in the use of the Community Online Reporting Service (CORS). Year to date, total crimes reported on CORS increased 75% (36,487 vs 20,801), Lost Property reports increased 39% (1,390 vs 1,001) & Traffic Collisions reports increased 755% (13,895 vs 1,626). In 2021, LAPD Dispatchers have diverted 5,902 incoming calls to CORS, 906 calls to @211LACounty and 561 calls to @MyLA311.

Today around 11:20 Hollywood area officers responded to the 6700 block of Hollywood Blvd. They were responding to several separate radio calls of a man armed with a gun. The comments of the radio call indicated it was a male white armed with a handgun walking on Hollywood Blvd. When officers arrived in the area they saw a male matching the description armed with a handgun. At that time there was an officer involved shooting. The man was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he has died.

Today at about 9:30 AM, West Valley Patrol Officers responded to the 8000 block of Reseda Blvd for a radio call involving a possible death at one of the apartments. The officers went inside an apartment and discovered 3 children at scene. LA City Fire Department personnel pronounced all 3 children deceased at scene. Investigators from Robbery-Homicide Division and Juvenile Division will be conducting this investigation. The children all appear to be under the age of 5 years old.

The Los Angeles Police Department continues to ask for calm and cooperation as the installation of fencing in support of the Echo Park rehabilitation effort continues. Unfortunately officers have received projectiles and refusals from individuals blocking streets in the area. We ask for your immediate assistance in leaving the area. An unlawful assembly has been declared twice. At this time no use of force have been reported.

Tonight, we are saddened to share some shocking crime stats.

16 days into 2021, and Homicides in South LA are up 150% compared to last year.

It’s our shared responsibility—law enforcement, community members and elected officials—to stop this senseless violence. Victims Shot in South LA are up 742% compared to last year.

This tragic continuation of gun violence, primarily concentrated in our most disadvantaged neighborhoods, must stop.

Here is the latest information on last night’s incident at LAPD Harbor Station:

At about 10:00 p.m., an LAPD Officer was working the front desk when a Male Hispanic suspect came to the front lobby. The officer met with the suspect at which time the officer was assaulted. The officer’s gun was removed and he was fired upon, but not struck. The Watch Commander heard the commotion and responded to the lobby, at which time an officer involved shooting occured. The suspect ran to a white pick-up truck and drove off.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of Victory Blvd and Reseda, within @LAPDwestvalley Division. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. Around 6:15am patrol officers received a radio call of a man armed with a knife at the intersection of Reseda and Victory. When officers arrived they saw the man in the intersection armed with a knife, at that time there was an Officer-Involved Shooting.

This morning at approx 5:20am, LAPD Southwest Officers observed a possible burglary from motor vehicle suspect in the area of Vernon Ave and La Salle Ave. Upon officers exiting their marked black and white police vehicle the suspect began to run grabbing his front waist band. Ofcrs went in foot pursuit of the suspect, who began discarding items of property & turned in the direction of the ofcrs, at which time ofcrs heard a shot fired as the suspect continued to run. Ofcrs put out a "Officer Needs Help Call" & set up a perimeter for the suspect.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in South Los Angeles, in the area of 87th St. & Broadway. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. Shortly after midnight, Southeast ofcrs heard gunshots in the area of Manchester/Broadway & responded to investigate. In addition calls of a Shooting In Progress had been generated. The ofcrs came upon a shooting in progress, at which point an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of Vermont Ave. & 22nd St. (near the 10 freeway). A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. At 9:24pm, Southwest Division plain clothes Narcotics ofcrs drove into a gas station at 22nd St. & Vermont Ave. As the ofcrs drove towards the gas islands, two male black suspects armed with handguns fired at the officers at which time an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred.

Hundreds Arrested During Friday Night’s Protest

The Los Angeles Police Department continues to assess the full extent of property damage from last night’s protest activities. Several police vehicles were vandalized, and numerous downtown businesses were damaged and looted. A total of 533 arrests were made last night related to the protests. The charges include Burglary, Looting, Probation Violation, Battery on Police Officer, Attempt Murder and Failure to Disperse. All but 18 of the arrestees have released on their own recognizance.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of 23rd Street & Wall Street, within @NewtonLAPD Division. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. Last night, around 9:40 pm, uniformed Newton Area officers were driving a marked black and white police vehicle in the 2200 block of Wall St. The officers observed a vehicle back up and collide with a parked vehicle.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of 29th Street & Central Avenue, within @NewtonLAPD Division. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. UPDATE: At approx 5:30pm Newton Division officers responded to a multi-vehicle traffic collision in the area of 32nd St. & San Pedro. Upon arrival they encountered a male Hispanic in the street armed with a folding edged weapon, at which point an Ofcr-Involved Shooting occurred.

There has been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting in the area East Cesar Chavez Ave & N Savannah St, within our LAPD Hollenbeck Area. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. Shortly after 11:00pm yesterday evening, LAPD Metropolitan Division Officers observed a shooting in progress in the area of East Cesar Chavez Ave and N Savannah St.

The LAPD has identified a third employee who has a confirmed case of COVID-19. A uniformed officer assigned to our Central Division exhibited symptoms that were characteristic of the disease earlier this week, and was sent home when a Supervisor became aware. The Department has since disinfected all of the individual’s work spaces and any common areas within Central Division. We have also identified anyone who may have come in contact with the employee and directed them to a contract healthcare provider for evaluation.

There has been and Officer involved shooting in our Pacific Area, in the area of Sepulveda and Venice Blvd. Avoid the area and expect a large police presence. A Public Information Officer is responding and we will provide more details as they become available. At approximately 12:40 pm, Officers recieved a radio call of a ‘415 Man with a Gun’ in the area of Sepulveda Blvd and Tuller Ave. An LAPD Supervisor responded and made contact with suspect at which point an Officer Involved Shooting occurred.

There has been an Officer-Involved Shooting in Boyle Heights, in the area of Malabar St and North Fickett St. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. Around 7:10pm this evening, Officers assigned to the Hollenbeck Gang Unit approached a male suspect. Upon contact, an Officer involved shooting occurred.

There has been an Officer-Involved Shooting in @NewtonLAPD Division, in the area of 29th Street and Central Avenue. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene and we will provide more details as they become available. @NewtonLAPD Around 8:00 a.m. this morning a Newton Area sergeant was notified by a citizen who said a man with a knife was walking northbound Central Avenue from 34th Street. The sergeant drove northbound on Central Avenue and observed a man with no shirt, armed with a knife.
