Heading to Rome to start a 2-week lecture tour titled my “A funny thing happened on the way to (the next) salvation” tour; with additional stops in Turin & Copenhagen. I am considering the promises, lessons learned & remnants of Big Data / ML. @UBCEduc@Paragon_Testing@ECPS_ubc
“On the ML, Big Data Revolution That Never Happened in Measurement & Psychometrics: What Have We Learned, & What are the By-products?" The claims that ML/Big Data would be a disruptive innovation in our field have not gone at all according to plan— lessons learned & by-products.
I was just told that all venues are at capacity for seating. The theme of the lecture series 'a critical look at the promises and by-products of the big data & ML revolution in assessment & testing' appears to be of interest to academics, governments, & industry. @UBCDeanEduc
@UBCDeanEduc There have been some successes such as the ones lead @AlinaVdav at ACTNext, & by Bryan Maddox at @MicroAnalytics. What I learn from those successes is that one needs strong conceptual foundation & study, computer scientists, & that psychometrics are not supplanted by technology.
@UBCDeanEduc@AlinaVdav@MicroAnalytics For me, the contrast of how @ACTNext@AlinaVdav and @MicroAnalytics emerge as successes from the revolution (that did not happen) is interesting; the former is the standard bearer of the ML/Big Data promises and the latter a kind of by-product that revolutionary thinking fosters.
