Been thinking a lot about #Sonic the Movie since I saw it. I have been intensely bothered by one thing and I cannot get it out of my head.

A PhD is basically an academic training programme. It teaches you the research skills to progress up the academic ladder. You don't NEED more than one PhD, and it is not a sign of genius, evil or otherwise.
I have seen a couple of people get two PhDs. Usually a big change of direction or a later in life goal. I can understand that.
BUT FIVE?
Why hasn't he progressed? Why isn't he going for postdocs? Why isn't he co-I or PI on his own grant yet?

This may be a damning indictment of the state of the job market in Robotnik's field (evil physics?). Perhaps he had no other choice and he's been badly let down by the supervillain academic industrial complex.
But 5 is mad and I don't think any responsible uni would allow it.

If Robotnik took 3yrs to complete AND viva, he's spent 15 years doing PhDs. 3-4 of which were pointless indecision.
If I were an evil government stooge recruiting manager, this would be a big red flag to me.
