Some points made on @Morning_Joe this morning regarding ODNI situation:

- ODNI was established after the 9/11 attacks to ensure national security decisions are guided by unvarnished facts

- The intelligence community is our nation's first line of defense against foreign threats
- Accordingly, chaos in ODNI (and a "shoot the messenger environment" inside the IC) means our country is less safe

- Other disturbing signs in addition to the sudden dismissal of Joe McGuire, a 40-year Navy veteran:
- The ODNI's annual "Worldwide Threat Assessment" has reportedly not been briefed to Congress because Trump may not like it politico.com/news/2020/02/0…

- This annual report is essential to informing lawmakers about global trends and their impact on our country
- It's also released early each year (except this year, notably) in unclassified format to the American people

- Last year's assessment presented hard facts on China, Russia, Iran, ISIS, climate, etc., contrary views often parroted from Trump officials👉dni.gov/files/ODNI/doc…
- Trump didn't like that report, so he berated the DNI and intelligence community that put it together. nytimes.com/2019/01/30/us/…

- That was a precursor to what we're seeing now, with Trump firing intelligence officials for doing their jobs.
- Key question: what's in the ODNI's unclassified 2020 threat assessment report? Why can't the American people to see it? Who's holding it back?🚨

Glenn Fine was a professional and independent IG whose reports for any policymaker were essential reading. His assessments of the campaign against ISIS were sometimes tough but always helpful. Losing people like Glenn ensures less accountability, more waste, and failed policy.
It’s troubling in the extreme that in the midst of a national emergency with thousands of Americans dying, the WH agenda seems to include removing the most experienced Inspectors General. If a foreign country were doing this, the State Department might express deep concern.
Here’s what Fine’s peers said about him just LAST WEEK in selecting him to lead #COVID19 oversight under the $2T CARES Act. “Uniquely qualified ... more than 15 years of experience ...” Now suddenly replaced. Troubling.

As this news breaks, important to ask: where’s the DNI threat assessment? An unclassified version is released each year to inform the American people about threats to our nation, including public health threats. Except this year. WHY NOT? What’s in it? 🤔
Some background on the bottled-up report in thread below. This is the first year since the DNI’s first threat assessment in 2006 that there has been no public report. Someone doesn’t want the public to see it. WHY? Presumption: because its authors—IC professionals—tell the truth.
Tonight’s news only reinforces the warning from Joe McGuire, fired last month as DNI for no credible reason, and his fellow IC colleagues, that this WH is actively eroding OUR nation’s first line of defense: its intelligence community and professionals. washingtonpost.com/opinions/forme…
